Janos “John Szabados, Resident of the Month John was born Dec. 29, 1934, in Budapest, Hun- gary. John had a loving mother and father, and two sisters. He was the middle child between his sisters. As a child growing up, he was an avid soccer player and won many games against his opponents as the “goalie.” John then went on to become an accomplished boxer, winning the Golden Gloves in boxing. Life was not good in Hungary. At the time, Adolf Hitler was invading and moving through Poland and Czechoslovakia. As a teenager, John witnessed the bombings, explosions, and the soldiers being killed in the streets as the Germans marched through. He witnessed the horrors of the war. His grandfather owned a win- ery and John would help him in the summer months. He has very fond mem- ories of helping to pick the grapes and turn them into wine. John came to the United States in 1952, at Ellis Island, N.Y. He then moved to California to work at the General Motors car assembly plant, where he worked for 33 years. Upon retiring, he was honored for never hav- ing an un-excused absence. John met and married a Hungarian lady named Anna, at a dance. Together the couple raised five children: Joe, Steve, John, Margaret, and Caroline, and one step-son Frank. After retirement, John moved to Las Vegas, Nev. He always prides himself for his handsome looks and was one of the best dressers around. After all, he said, “All the girls are crazy about a sharp dressed man.” John has been a resident here at CMHCF since May 2014. He enjoys at- tending the men’s lunch, van rides, and, at times, he enjoys coming to exercise. Congratulations John, on being our resident of the month for March!
