Roberta Renshaw Resident of the Month Roberta Renshaw was born April 9, 1934, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Hilbert and Grace Hoffman. Roberta had a brother, Marlin, who passed away 60 years ago. Her father built large boat pumps for Union Steam Pump and her mother was a housewife. Roberta loved her parents dearly and said “I always wanted to go home to be with them while growing up. We were a plain ordinary family, but I felt that her father was an angel. I feel very blessed to have been their daughter and was able to be with them for many years.” Her mother lived to be 96 and her father passed away at 90 years of age. Roberta attended schools and graduated from high school in Battle Creek, Michigan. She recalled how frigid the win- ters were there and how unique their playgrounds were com- pared to those in Missouri. She remembers all of the play- ground equipment being indoors in a large room when she was in Kindergarten. The room had a play gym, sand boxes, slides, and swings, and had a large curved window for them to look out while playing. It was common for the temperatures in the winter to be 20-30 degrees below zero and she nev- er liked the cold. When Roberta was around eight years old, she remembered meeting a guy who was rais- ing two cubs and a momma bear and kept them on chains in his yard. He let people feed them if they wanted. She had a brand new pretty blue dress on and walked up to the momma bear with a handful of raisins and she ate them out of her hand. When she got a second handful and attempted to feed her the bear swatted at her and ripped five slashes in her dress. She said it was a scary and memorable experience she will never forget. Roberta married Albert Renshaw in 1952, and they were married for 25 years before ending in divorce. Shortly after getting married, they moved to Houston, Texas, where he became a print pressman. About a year later they decided to move to the Bolivar area where they found a farm near Polk and they became farmers. The couple milked around seventy head of cattle, planted and baled milo and planted and combined fescue. Albert and Roberta had two wonderful sons together, Larry and David, and unfortunately both have passed away. She said they were the sweetest boys that ever lived. Roberta had three highlights in her life. She was saved at a Missionary Baptist church near Polk, Missouri, loving and spending time with her husband, and the birth of her two sons. Roberta said, “God sent me two of the nicest people in my life when I needed them the most, Ed and Charles.” She met Ed when he bought her farm and they became wonderful friends from there. She met Charles at church and he preached at her mother’s funeral. They have been good friends ever since. She is so thankful for each of them. Roberta joined our CMHCF family in July 2018. Her favorite things about living here are playing bingo, playing other games, and her good friends that she has made while here. Congratulations, Roberta, on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month!
