Robert “ Bob ” Gorman was born March 27 , 1932 , in Conway , Missouri to Fred and Eunice Gorman . Bob is the middle child to four siblings , Larry , JP , Wilma and David who have all passed away . His family had an 800 acre farm where they harvested oats and corn , baled hay , and raised cattle and mules . When the state began developing Interstate 44 , Bob ’ s family sold them 30 mules to help the contractors do the dirt work .
Bob attended a rural school from 1 st -8 th grade at Warden Chapel near Conway . He then went to Conway school and quit his freshman year to join the Marines where he stayed in for 4 years . He fought in the Korean War .
Bob met his future wife , Doris , while he was attending dairy meetings . He felt that they got along pretty well after dating her for several years , so he told her he wanted to run away with her . The couple were married Aug . 3 , 1962 . She was the love of his life for 42 years until her passing sixteen years ago . Bob never had any children of his own but has always claimed Doris ’ children , Joyce and Bill as his own . He also has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren of whom he is very proud .
After the service , Bob worked at 5 J Appliance in Niangua , Missouri where he learned how to service washers , dryers and other appliances . He then opened Gorman ’ s appliance repair which he operated for approximately 15 years , also in Niangua . He had always had an interest in mechanics and spent a lot of time working on cars for high school kids . Later , he and his cousin , Kenny opened a mechanics shop near Phillipsburg , Missouri where they fixed many vehicles over the years .
Bob and Doris took pride in having a large garden every year and they canned everything they could . He recalled making hundreds of pounds of Christmas candy with her each year . He said , “ We enjoyed this so much .” Bob also organized the Niangua Christmas parades with Joyce ’ s help . He was very active in the Lion ’ s club where he loved to help with the carnivals . He spent a lot time fishing with Bill on Pomme De Terre Lake . He also liked to play around on the guitar .
Bob joined our CMHCF family in August 2020 . He said his favorite part of living here is the kind and caring staff . Congratulations , Bob on being chosen as CMHCF ’ s resident of the month .
