Marcia Grassley Resident of the Month Marcia Grassley was born on Sept.24, 1939, in St. Louis, Mo. to Hugh & Viola VanCleave. Marcia had two older sisters who have both passed away. Her sister Audrey was 16 years older than Marcia and Janet was 9 years older. Her Father was an Office Debit at John Hancock Insurance and her Mother was a housewife and then went back to school to get her Licensed Practical Nursing degree. When Marcia’s grandparents and parents decided to move to Texas when she was very young, the trip from Mis- souri remained vividly in her mind. “Our vehicle broke down so we had to stay at a hotel which happened to be across from the train tracks. We woke abruptly at 3 am to a horn blow from a train. It nearly scared us to death,” said Marcia. The family stayed in Texas and she graduated from Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio, Texas. She continued her education at a vocational school where she received her Licensed Practical Nursing degree. She spent over twenty years being an LPN at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Baptist Hospital also in San Antonio, in Doctor’s offices, and pri- vate duty. After meeting her second husband and father of two of her daughters and her son, the couple moved to Massachusetts. She had to take her state board exams again to continue her nursing career in another state. Her daughters, Julia and Mary live in Texas, daughter Kathleen lives in Ohio, and her son Shawn lives in Bolivar, MO. She was also blessed with 7 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren whom she loves dearly. Marcia married Richard Grassley on Dec. 13, 1997. Last month they celebrated 21 years of marriage. One of the greatest highlights of her life was the birth of her only son. When Shawn was in cub scouts, they had a raffle to win a color television and Shawn begged and begged her to buy a raffle ticket, so she bought one and was shocked when she won. “One of the most memorable and scary moments in my life was when I had a heart attack and stroke,” said Marcia. “The medical team had to resuscitate me, put in a trachea, and place me on a ventilator. I was in a coma for 9 days and my family was told that I might not live. Thankfully I improved and had to learn how to walk, talk, and eat again. I spent four months doing rehabilitation in a care facility in Warsaw, Mo. During those four months, I was rushed to Mercy hospital in Springfield, Mo., and was there for two weeks because my oxygen had dropped very low. When I was released from the hospital, I returned to the care facility to continue with rehab. “ Marcia has lots of hobbies including playing bingo, knitting and crocheting, sewing, playing dominoes, spending time with her children and grandchildren and reading. Marcia joined our family at CMHCF in May 2018. When asked what she loved about living at CMHCF she said, overall she liked the staff the best, the residents, and all of the activi- ties. She generously gives hugs to all of her friends at CMHCF daily. It’s always something to look forward to. Congratulations Marcia, on being chosen as CMHCF’s January Resident of the Month.
