Earshel and Carolyn Bays, Resident of the Month Earshel Bays was born April 8, 1936 and Carolyn was born March 30, 1930. Both were born and raised Polk County. They each married and lived separate lives until 1964, when they met at the Joplin Hospital. Carolyn was one of the nurses who cared for Earshel’s mother. One day, when Earshel came to visit his mother, he saw Carolyn and, according to him, it was “love at first sight.” After their divorces were finalized, the couple traveled to Tijuana and were married. Earshel and Carolyn Bays According to the couples lawyer at the time, the marriage was not valid. Earschel and Carolyn went through three separate wedding ceremonies, in different states, before they were legally married in a small ceremony by the Justice of the Peace. The couple often jokes about being married four times for extra measure. Whatever they did it must have worked. Earshel worked as a barber for 60 years and owned two bait shops. They were blessed with two daughters: Cari and Carolyn. Earshel would always be heard saying, “The most important thing to me is my three girls.” For Earshel and Carolyn, family always comes first. Earshel, Carolyn and their daughters were always packed and prepared to go on an adventure. The couple recalls one instance when, on the last day of school, they picked the girls up, gave them a National Geographic magazine, told the girls to pick one of the national forests they would like to visit and off they went. That year, they spent the entire summer traveling. The couple loved to take spur of the moment trips and would travel across entire states to have dinner with a friend. From the moment they met, Earshel and Carolyn they were inseparable. Congratulations on being chosen as CMHCF’s February 2015 Residents of the Month Earshel and Carolyn Bays
