Betty “Cricket” Graham,
Resident of the Month
Betty Graham was born in Kansas City,
Mo., on April 6, 1927, as Betty Christina
Hoodenpyle.
“My parents were Reva and Earl Hoodenpyle.
I had three brothers and one sister. I was the
youngest and when I was 18 months old I
lost my mother so my aunt raised me,” says
Betty.
According to Betty, she had a pretty good
life. She played ball and fished any chance
she had. If they weren’t in school or at
church you could find Betty outside.
“My brothers treated me like gold because
I was the youngest and they were always there to take care of me,” says
Betty. “I got my nick name ‘Cricket’ when I was in school when we were
playing a tournament, I just happened to be playing against my best
friend ‘Smay’ — she was good.”
Betty’s coach told her that if she wanted the prize she had better get
down to business! “I hit a big one that won the game,” remarked Betty.
Her best friend Smay came over to tease her and said, “You little cricket,
I’m going to stomp you in the ground for that,” laughed Betty. Of course
Smay was teasing, but from then on everyone called her Cricket.
Betty met her sweetheart Harlan Graham when she was young. “I re-
member I really loved him and that never changed,” shared Betty. Harlan
was recruited into the Army during WWII. “Those were really scary times,”
remarked Betty. “I was going to be a teacher, but when he came home we
got married and that put an end to that. We just wanted to be together
and live a good life,” says Betty.
The couple lived on the farm and milked cows near Morrisville, Mo.
They were blessed with three daughters, Sherry, Reva and Cindy.
Betty has lived at CMHCF since March 2017. She enjoys bingo, kids
club and making new friends at CMHCF. “I try to keep a good attitude and
that will get me through almost anything,” says Betty.
Betty likes most of the foods served at CMHCF and really enjoyed being
in the pageant, where to her surprise, she won.
Congratulations Betty on being named Resident of the Month.
