Donna Jayne, Resident of the Month Donna was born October 27, 1944, to Edwin and Leta Smith. Donna had two sisters, Judy and Virginia both of whom have passed away. Donna was the baby of the fami- ly. The kids attended Bolivar schools where Donna went to Mitchell Junior High and graduated from Northward school. She loves to tell people that the place she graduat- ed from is now a museum. She continued her education at Missouri University in Columbia where she earned her PhD in Education. Donna was married to her husband, Mitch Jayne, for 25 years. Mitch was known as one of the Darling “Darlin’s” on The Andy Griffith Show, from 1963-1966. The Darlings made several appearances on that show and toured as The Dillard bluegrass band throughout the late 1960s. Donna spent her years working as a supervisor of programming for Missouri state school for the severely handicapped for Eldon, Jefferson City, and Columbia, Mo. schools. She also had a radio show in Salem, Mo., with her husband called Hickory Hollow Time. This was a bluegrass and comedy show that she co-hosted and engineered. During this time, she also had a story time radio show where she read children’s books, and the Magic Lantern show which was a variety show for kids. Donna and Mitch built a beautiful log home in the Mark Twain National Forest. Donna helped peel all of the logs and split out every shingle on the roof for their house. Unfortu- nately the couple lost their dream home to a fire several years later. One of Donna’s favorite memories was having the opportunity to meet Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, and George Lindsey from The Andy Griffith Show when they were in Burbank, Calif. filming one of the episodes that Mitch was on. She said everyone was so friendly, the set was very relaxed, and everyone had a good time. She said Andy wouldn’t have it any other way and made sure everyone always felt welcomed and comfortable. When Mitch went back to film The Andy Griffith reunion movie sometime in the 1970s he lost his wedding ring while on set and Donna was in the hospital with a broken leg. Mitch thought it might have rolled under the make-up trailer so he got down on his hands and knees and began looking. He realized someone else was under there helping him too. When he turned around to see who it was, he found Andy on his hands and knees helping him. Andy told Mitch that he wouldn’t let him go back home to Donna without his ring so he wanted to help. Mitch ended up finding his ring in his pocket. Donna came to Citizens Memorial Healthcare Facility in December 2017. She enjoys the friendliness and helpfulness that the staff shows towards her, and she loves her room- mate!
