Violet Doyle, Resident of the Month Violet was born in 1926 to parents, Lucille and Violet James Copeland in Rolla, Mo. She was the middle child of three girls. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to an old house in Pulaski County. As a child, Violet lived through the Great Depression. “Times were tough,” She said. “At that time, food was not easy to come by.” Violet and her family raised chickens, which was her main source of food during her younger years. Since the family did not have a way to keep meat, her mother would often say, “Can you run that chicken down for supper?” Violet remembers going to pick one out and cleaning it. Violet enjoyed hunting and cooking their food, which her two sisters didn’t. She remembers picking and canning blackberries, making sure the family always Violet Doyle had a supply. “It was a hard, hot job,” Violet said with a smile. “I enjoyed every part of it.” As a child, Violet had a pet squirrel. She recalled a time when the squirrel chewed the buttons off all of her clothes. Her mother ordered her to take the squirrel outside and let it go. Once outside, he ran up a tree and Violet never saw him again. Violet loves pies. Over the years, she has made lots of them. She still enjoys a Rhubarbstrawberry pie the most. She remembers having pie suppers and she would make her famous coconut cream pie to raise money for her school to buy books. As an eighth grader, she worked at Fort Wood where she sewed parachutes. She enjoyed sewing and made many of her own clothes her. After she graduated, Violet took a job in Jefferson City, Mo. where she worked in the Capital. She enjoyed all the culture Jefferson City had to offer. For Violet, it was fun to see how others lived and dressed. When she wasn’t working, she would spend her time sewing new clothes for herself on a rented sewing machine. Eventually, Violet returned to Fort Wood, where she worked an office job. “It made me feel so big when I got that first pay check,” she said with a giggle. “I went to the fabric store and bought the material I liked and wanted to sew!” At 22 years old, Violet married James Doyle. James was a good, hard-working man. Since he was a carpenter and builder, they were able to build three of their houses. Together, they were blessed with three children. Sadly, one of her children has since passed. “No one should have to outlive their children,” she said. “I try to think of the fun times and be grateful for them.” She recalls the time she took her four year old out to go squirrel hunting. Laughing, she tells the story of how every time she would take a shot, she would miss. Her son was so mad. According to Violet, some of her favorite things are sweets, pies and Spanish music. She still enjoys listening to cooking shows. Congratulations to Violet Doyle on being named CMHCF’s August Resident of the Month.
