Ivan Rymes
Resident of the Month
Ivan Rymes was born May 11, 1926, in Hickman, Nebraska
to Albert “Bert” and Marguerite Rymes. Ivan was the second
born to his identical twin, Ervin. They also had a sister, Joanne.
His father was a missionary in New Mexico along with his moth-
er who also cooked for the mission. They later moved to Long
Beach, California where he built ships for the Navy and his
mother was a musician. She played the organ and piano for
church and other gatherings. Ivan and his siblings attended Indi-
an mission school until he was 13 years old. They then moved to
Long Beach where he played trombone in the band and graduat-
ed high school.
Growing up, Ivan was always interested in electronics. He
worked at a radio/TV repair shop before enlisting in the Navy in
1944. He was stationed in the South Pacific area during World War II and left the Navy after
it was over. He worked in radio communications on the ship. His twin, Ervin was also on the
same ship. After the war, Ivan attended a community college in Long Beach, and then grad-
uated from Occidental College with a major in speech. He was involved in a lot of theatrical
productions. Even though his interest was electronics, he had a strong calling to ministry.
While living in Long Beach, one day he stopped by the church where his mother played
the organ to pick her up. He recalls seeing this beautiful young lady named June sitting in
the church. Ivan’s mother and June had become quite close so she introduced Ivan to her. He
believed it was love at first sight. June on the other hand, held back her feelings, but thought
he was charming. This introduction led to romantic courtship that turned into a marriage on
July 8, 1949. The highlight of Ivan’s life was marrying the love of his life. They were insep-
arable.
Shortly after the couple were married, Ivan began seminary school at San Anselmo in
San Rafael, California. During the day he attended school and at night he worked as a prison
guard in San Quentin prison. Ivan and June had three children Suzi, Martin and Stan, eight
grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Ivan began his pastoring career in 1953 at a Pres-
byterian church in Topeka, Kansas. Over the next several years his family followed him in
his profession as he led churches in Nebraska, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. In the
1980s they returned to San Anselmo where he completed his doctoral degree. Ivan officially
retired in 1992 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After retirement, he continued to serve as an
interim pastor at smaller churches. When he turned 80, he told June that he wouldn’t preach
anymore. He was invited by people to teach Sunday school and was also involved in prison
ministry at a federal prison in Florence, Colorado. He was a pastor for 54 years.
There was not much time for hobbies during Ivan’s career, but he always enjoyed being a
ham radio operator, tinkering with electronics, national and international traveling, camping,
listening to music, playing games and public speaking with the group Toastmasters. He was
involved with Wee Kirk conferences which focused on support for small churches and was
treasurer of a five state area. June was the assistant to the coordinator for Wee Kirk.
Ivan joined our CMHCF family in September 2018. His favorite part of living here is the
kind and caring staff and visiting with everyone.
Congratulations Ivan on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month!!
