Mildred Tatom,
Resident of the Month
Mildred was born July 27, 1920, to Cora and
Harlo McGranahan. Mildred was an only child. She
moved to Bolivar when she was 12 years old. Her
parents had heard quartets from Southwest Baptist
College and wanted her to attend, so they moved.
Mildred will always be grateful to her parents for
moving to Bolivar. Her parents had great faith.
She graduated from Bolivar High School and
attended Southwest Baptist College, now known as
Southwest Baptist University, and received AA in
Education. Mildred later transferred to Springfield
Teachers College before leaving to marry her hus-
band Bill Tatom, June 5, 1943, and start her career
in education. Her husband was a Southern Baptist Minister for 70 years. The
couple lived in Arizona, Arkansas, California and Missouri. Together they
had one daughter, Nancy Ammerman, Dean of Sociology of Religion at Bos-
ton University.
“While my husband and I lived in Independence, our neighbors had a really
great garden. I hated possum’s and one day my neighbor came over carrying
a sack and told me that it was a possum and that it was dead and skinned and
all prepared to just put in the oven. But I was to scared to put it in the oven, I
didn’t even open the bag. I waited for my husband to come home and he no-
ticed I was bothered and pale looking about something and so I had him look
at the bag and it was rhubarb,” said Mildred.
Mildred worked as a school teacher in a one room house. After Nancy was
born, she stopped working full time as a teacher, but continued to substitute
teach. Her 70 years as a pastor’s wife brought her great joy and she made
many wonderful friends in each area. She currently attends First Baptist
Church in Bolivar and enjoys when she is able to attend services.
Mildred came to live at CMHCF on Dec. 7, 2014. She enjoys meeting new
people, she loves the music, and enjoys getting to play the organ for the other
residents. She also enjoys being able to visit with her friends and
Bingo. Congratulations, Mildred, on being our resident of the month for
April!
