Steve Johnson, Resident of the Month Steve Johnson is sitting here with his dog, Maggie, and visiting with his wife, Sheryll. Steve always has a big smile on his face, but when Sheryll and Maggie are around, he is truly happy. Steve was born in Iowa City, Iowa. His mom was Leathda Slycord. Steve’s dad, Charles, died when he was an infant, so he never really got to know him. As a child, Steve had six siblings: David, Charles, Kent, Mary Lou, and Cindy Sue. He has always loved sports. As a child, Steve was always involved in a sport. While in high school, he was voted the MVP of his basketball team, First Team All Conference, and was mention at All-State. Steve was also a Steve Johnson member of his school’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams, winning numerous awards in each sport. In high school, Steve drove a metallic, midnight-blue Camaro. “I loved it so much. I waxed the ashtrays,” Johnson said with a smile. “And of course, it was kept inside the garage.” After his high school graduation, Steve and his best friends, Mike Anderson and Tom Carger, went on a trip of a lifetime. “What a great time! We travelled all over the U.S.” Steve said with a smile. “Driving and Rock-n-Roll...those were the days.” Steve’s favorite places they had visited were the Grand Teton Mountains and Mt. Rushmore. Steve met Sheryll while in school. In 1975, on Valentine’s Day, the couple were married. Steve and Sheryll have been blessed with four children: Troy, Shane, Jenny and JJ. Steve has a great love for Rock-n-Roll music. He can often be found listening to the music of Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Beatles. According to Steve, in his day, he was a pretty good singer. He sang in a few bars and enjoyed every minute of it. He tells stories about playing his six and twelve string guitars. According to Steve, his favorite songs are Women by John Lennon, and Words by the Bee Gee’s, because the songs remind him of his wife and their children. Steve enjoys several aspects of CMHCF including the pizza, the men’s lunch, bible study, ice cream socials and games. He loves watching Sci-fi movies and of course listening to music. Congratulations, Steve, on being chosen as CMHCF’s Resident of the Month for April.
