The DAISY Award
CMH Home Care Services has had seven DAISY Award recipients since CMH began the
program in January 2019: Mary Choate, RN Home Health, May 2019; Carah Hicks, LPN
Home Health, July 2019; Mendy Manes, LPN Home Health, November 2019; Terri Scalley,
RN Home Health, January 2020; Chantel Carter, RN Hospice, February 2020; Sharon Kennedy,
RN Hospice, March 2020; and Liz Alexander, RN Palliative Care, May 2020.
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition
program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every
day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died
from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they
deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When
he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way.
Each recipient has touched the lives of patients and their families and has gone above and
beyond their duties in a caring and compassionate way. Each DAISY Award honoree has
been recognized at a ceremony in their unit and have received a beautiful certificate, a
DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture titled, “A Healer’s Touch.”
Additionally, everyone in the unit celebrated with cinnamon rolls -- a favorite of Patrick’s
during his illness. The Barnes Family asks that whenever and wherever nurses smell that
wonderful cinnamon aroma, they stop for a moment and think about how special they are.
