downtown. Jefferson is a historic old riverport known for its Victorian architecture. U. S. presidents have stayed here. There are lots of shops.
Three great restaurants there are: Joseph’ s Riverport BBQ, Aunt Skinners Riverboat Club, and my favorite, Kitt’ s Kornbread Sandwiches and Pie Shop. They have amazing cornbread sandwiches, soups, and 12-15 different freshly baked pies daily.
When full, return up Polk St and atβ€œ Y,” turn left on TX 49 West. Go 5 miles, then turn left on FM 729. Go 4 miles, turn left on FM 726, and go 6 miles.
You will ride across the dam of
Lake of the Pines, one of Texas’ most beautiful lakes. Loblolly pines grow right to the shore, and numerous islands dot the blue waters.
Turn right at the intersection to stay on FM 726, going 7 miles. At the stop, turn right on FM 450 and go into Ore City. FM 450 is a motorcycle’ s favorite road. Ore City is so named for the iron ore there that supplied the closed steel mill.
Go straight across US 259 onto FM 1649 and go 10 miles. Lots of shady curves here. Continue straight onto FM 555 going 4 miles.
At the stop, turn right on TX
154 and go 3 miles back to where we started in Gilmer. Louisiana folk take LA 1 from Shreveport, 52 miles to the 3 State marker, and Arkansas peeps can travel South from Texarkana on 71 to Ida, Louisiana, turn right on LA 168, then right on LA 1 to get to the marker.
It’ s a fun trip to an interesting spot no matter how you want to go. CMA
