( continued from page 22) dialysis. As I mentioned earlier, my first day was May 14, 2021. On May 15, 2023, I received the call just before midnight, informing me that there were actually two kidneys available for me. Once again, I had a big decision to make. Since I still had renal function in my own kidneys, I was chosen to receive this donor’ s kidneys.
Kidneys are rated on a scale of 1 to 100. The lower the number, the better the kidney. These were rated over 85. At 85, they can be referred to as aβ€œ sleeper kidney.” This means it can take some time to wake up and start working after it is transplanted. Now I didn’ t have to take these. It wouldn’ t have changed my place in line. Here comes the patience thing again. I’ ve now waited two years for a transplant. Do I take these and risk it taking months to work, or wait for a better-rated kidney? So, I asked if I could think about this for a little bit. The girl I talked to said,β€œ Sure, I will call you back in five minutes.” Five minutes, are you nuts? You want me to make the biggest decision about my life in five minutes?
After coming to my senses, I realized God wouldn’ t have let them call me if this wasn’ t what I was supposed to do. And sure enough, she called back exactly five minutes later. To which we told her,β€œ We are on our way.”
God has continued to bless me. Now I am part of a support group to help others going through the same journey achieve their goals. The first thing I tell them is to have faith and patience. CMA
