views and scenery everywhere . As you enter the town of Pioneer , you will be up to 3,000 feet elevation . The road continues to climb as you get into towering Ponderosa Pines and Redwoods . You will start climbing rapidly and may want to stop often to take pictures . We noticed we really enjoyed the smell of the trees up there . The temperature dropped from 76 to 66 degrees as we reached higher elevation . We stopped at Peddler Hill overlook at about 7,000 feet , with views of the mountains and a lake below . We decided to eat a snack while enjoying the fresh breeze from the canyon . There were many motorcyclists and many types of bikes enjoying the route that day .
We passed multiple lakes , including Silver Lake and Caples
Lake , which you ride alongside of at 7,800 feet . As we got closer to the peak , there were sections where the trees were stunted due to snow and elevation . It is so beautiful up at a high elevation . After cresting the top , there is an 8 % downgrade for the next three miles as we ride through the open rocky valley . When you are about 18 miles from Lake Tahoe , turn left onto CA 89N for approximately 11 miles , and then onto US-50E into Lake Tahoe .
Once you reach South Lake Tahoe , there are many choices for restaurants , shopping , site seeing , and even a gondola ride right from town up the mountain . Your options for continuing your ride are multiple , with continuing around the lake to make a loop , taking a different hwy back over
the mountains to California Valley , or maybe riding further down into Caron City or Reno , Nevada , a short 30-minute ride away . With a destination of Lake Tahoe and breathtaking views of high-elevation lakes , mountains , and trees along the ride . We hope you love this route as much as we did . CMA
