SUPPORT CENTER FEATURE

KATHERYN Morris,

CMA Graphic Artist in the Design Department, remembers fondly sitting cross-legged in front of her Dad on the bike as they rode down to the old red headquarters building, which sat out by the road, to visit Shirley Shreve.
Katheryn came with her parents to a CMA rally at age eight in what is now the Support Center warehouse and remembers being really excited and wanting to become a member. After the service, her dad took her to see Herb Shreve about membership. He quizzed her about being a Christian and what it meant to be a CMA member; he was suitably impressed by her sincerity and signed her up. The process for youngsters to join is vastly different today, and there was no CMA Kids then, but you can’ t invalidate her CMA membership after having passed review by the founder. Of course, she not only completed the original Ministry Team and later Member Training over the years, but is also intimately familiar with the material, having done proofing and layout of both printed projects.
With a love for graphics layout developed in high school from being on yearbook staff and a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design in hand, Katheryn joined the CMA staff in April 2002. Included in Kat’ s( as she is affectionally known around the office) list of duties are proofing and layout of new training materials, layout of monthly Bible Studies, devotionals, and advertisements, posting the e-version of the HeartBeat, as well as the other e-newsletters, and any web changes requested by the IT Department.
Your CMA HeartBeat magazine is a major part of Katheryn’ s responsibilities and accounts for roughly seventy-five per cent of her workload. To ensure the utmost accuracy and professionalism, your monthly CMA HeartBeat takes a very complicated tour through the Support Center offices each month. Fasten your seatbelts as we attempt to follow the route it takes as it works its way through the layout, proofing, and approval process.
Raw articles originate with the HeartBeat Editor( we will be discussing those responsibilities in a subsequent article) and from that office are then distributed to the proofing team for editing. All material is then returned to the Editor for review, who then gives it to
Katheryn is just one story of the impact donations to the general fund make in supporting the National / International Support Center. General donations and the sale of Goodies fund the operations and maintenance at CMA National as well as provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our Iron Mountain facilities.
Above all, we want to thank you for your continued faithfulness to the ministry of CMA. Through your generosity, we are able to support evangelistic outreach to the motorcycling community worldwide with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Kat, who begins the layout process.
She begins to work her magic by formatting the HeartBeat for that particular month, then plugging the text into her template while considering the size of the page, the font, spaces between lines of type and even the space between the individual letters. Kat enjoys the challenge of fitting the text, sidebars, and as many pictures as possible into the available space. It is fun for her because, although the process is the same each month, the volume and type of information are always different. After she completes the layout, it is approved by the Design Department Head and the Editor, then back through the proofing team for final proofing. Also, the appropriate pages are sent to specific departments, such as Events and Goodies, for review to ensure accuracy of their specific information. Special attention is given to layout parameters, placement of paragraphs, page numbers, appropriate photos, any dropped letters, headers, the correct bleed, and any other deficiency that would lessen the quality of your magazine. The Editor reviews and forwards to Kat any needed changes resulting from this latest round of proofing. The HeartBeat then passes across the desks of the Vice President Evangelistic Outreach and our Executive Operations Manager for final review and approval.
Once again, on Kat’ s desk, final
