HERE we are in March already . For many of our chapters across the southern United States , motorcycling events are in full swing . For our members in the north , it may be too early to be out on the bikes , but plans are being made for upcoming events , activities , rallies , and rides .
It is good to have a plan : who to travel with , what to take , when to leave , where to go , and for what purpose . But as many of us have figured out , life doesn ’ t always go according to plan . Certainly not to my plans anyway .
Proverbs 19:21 ( NLT ) reminds us that , “ You can make your plans , but the Lord ’ s purpose will prevail .” The God who created Heaven and earth also created us . He knew us before the creation of the world . He has a plan and a purpose for each of us . It is good to have a plan . But we shouldn ’ t hold on to our plans too tightly .
We need to be flexible in our planning and allow God room to work . The Holy Spirit is already at work in the lives of people all around us , and He may want to use us in a special way . Instead of telling God our plans and asking for His blessing , we need to ask God what He would have us do and then seek an answer as we commit to a plan of action . There are times when we will not hear clearly from God , but as we proceed on our own course of action , remember that God may intercede with a new plan at any time .
I think James , the half-brother of Jesus , had this figured out . He wrote , “ What you ought to say is , ‘ If the Lord wants us to , we will live and do this or that ’” ( James 4:15 , NLT ). This concept is seldom heard in our Western world today , but surprisingly , it is still frequently practiced in Middle Eastern cultures . In Arabic , the phrase ‘ inshallah ’ is often added when someone makes a forward-looking prediction , and it means “ God willing ” or “ if God wills , it will happen .” This is
exactly what James was teaching .
It is fine and necessary to make plans . But as you do , remember that God has the final say in how things are going to go . Plans will certainly change , and things won ’ t go as you scripted them . Instead of getting frustrated or upset , remind yourself that God is up to something and you are part of His plans . The best plan you can come up with pales in comparison to the one He has for you . So trust God and live life expectantly . CMA
