Take a right at the stoplight , HWY 244 / 16A , through Keystone to 16A , and follow the signage to Custer State Park , turning left onto the Iconic Iron Mountain Road . Iron Mountain is rated as one of America ' s top ten scenic byways with 17 miles , 314 Curves , 14 Switchbacks , 3 Pigtails , 3 Tunnels , 2 Splits , and the most incredible sightings of Four Presidents that you will ever see . It is beautiful , adventurous , and a lot of fun to ride !
Once you leave the Black Hills
National Forest and enter Custer State Park , keep your eyes peeled for our vast variety of South Dakota wildlife , including bison ( aka Fluffy Cows ), big horn sheep , wild turkeys , and numerous deer . Nearing the end of the park , you will come upon Legion Lake and also , further west , Stockade Lake , with plenty of parking to stop , enjoy a roadside picnic area and the relaxing views .
Leaving the park and heading west into Custer , we recommend you stop at a couple of our favorite places to eat . The Custer Wolf , located at 506 Mount Rushmore Road in Custer , has a wonderful variety of items to choose from . You can even relax outside on their newly added patio area . If you ' re just in the
mood for something light and sweet , we recommend Purple Pie Place , located at 19 Mount Rushmore Road . Not only are their pies beyond heavenly , but they also serve sandwiches and other daily specials .
