BIG OWL 2017 BIG OWL 2017
THE BOOKTOWN FESTIVAL MAGAZINE
IN A WEEKEND PROGRAM THE BOOKTOWN FESTIVAL MAGAZINE
IN A WEEKEND PROGRAM
THE BIG ISSUE MAGAZINE
A fortnightly, independent
magazine that’s sold on
the streets by homeless,
marginalised and
disadvantaged people.
CLUNES BOOKTOWN wants to support emerging
writers, and have launched ourselves out onto the
highwire to do it. We’re going to make a digital
magazine, from start to send, inside the space of the
festival weekend. If you have the energy to write, the
will to publish and can operate a USB stick, we want
you to step onto the wire with us.
The Warehouse, in the heart of the Festival Precinct,
will be the creative hub for the 2017 edition. The
challenge itself is awesomely, terrifyingly simple:
1. Write something that responds in some way to
the places, spaces, people, experiences or ideas
you encounter during the festival.
2. Make it fewer than 300 words long.
3. Edit it. Proofread it. Proofread it again.
4. Do the design and layout.

Surrounded by leading creatives from industry bodies
you want to belong to and magazines you want to write
for, this is the must-visit space at the festival for anyone
interested in getting your words out into the wider world.
The Lifted Brow, Voiceworks, PEN Melbourne, The Big
Issue and Kill Your Darlings are all i nterested in hearing
from emerging writers. Sign-up, join-up, buy their stuff,
and say hello. They’ll be playing a part in the workshops
and will be on hand to give advice all weekend.
6. As the Head Honcho hits the digital equivalent of
the big red button and Big Owl #1 heads for the
nearest satellite, you must cheer loudly and offer
to pack up the nearest trestle table. T here’s no cost and no need to book, but there’s also no
room for slanderous, derogatory, sexist, racist, phobic,
humorless, uninteresting, ignorant or offensive writing.
That still leaves plenty of words to use and ideas to write
about. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of
Big Owl 2017, so get on it.
7. Pictures are also good.
(See separate workshops program) Bring your laptop, iPad or whatever you use to write with
and join us to create a Magazine in a Weekend.
In several flash workshops, in less than 20 minutes,
you'll get the pared down version of everything you
need to know to write, edit and publish your work.
