Gausiya Khan is from a locality populated by minorities, most of the residents are poor, Gausiya was also from a poor family of nine, Gausiya is 25 years old, she is unmarried. She also was a carpet weaver, after working for 5 hours a day she used to get 30 to 40 Rs per day. In a family of 9 the income was not good enough to pay for the basic amenities.

When Center for Integrated Development started working with Action Aid for the EC-PIE project, CID had conducted a survey of those who are working in carpets and Bidi industry, During our survey in Subhash Nagar we met Gausiya, she had discussed her issues with the team member about low wages, poverty, excessive work. From the early interaction with her we get to know that she and other workers are not aware about the welfare board and schemes. She said she wanted to improve her family situations but she cannot afford to skip working in order to learn new skills. Since she wanted to have a better life, she motivated herself to bear the burden for few months to have a better life ahead.

Gausiya enrolled herself in ATDC (Apparel designing) training program through the support of CID team at Gwalior. She was motivated by her aspiration of having a good life which inspired her to learn quickly and she brought perfection in her work with her hard work, she completed the skill training of three months without fail. Training has helped her in acquiring new skills of stitching, training was given from the point of view of industrial need therefore she is skilled to work at industry level.

After the training she started work from home, her primary work is stitching Indian ladies dresses for which she get about 150Rs per piece, normally she get a work a day and during festive season she get more work. Happy with the increase in income she is motivated to go for the further advance training.
