Vascular Surgery Expands Access and Capabilities
Renown Surgery Care’ s vascular surgery team is growing, enabling surgeons to provide more outpatient treatment for peripheral artery disease( PAD) and other conditions.
Davy Warner, MD
AS RENO’ S POPULATION INCREASES, so does the need for outpatient vascular surgery services. Renown Surgery Care is stepping up to meet that need. Last September, Reno native and fellowship-trained vascular surgeon Davy Warner, MD, joined the practice. Two more vascular surgeons will arrive this spring.
Thelinh Nguyen, MD“ Renown Health’ s service area has an immense
burden of vascular disease, with older adults, people who use tobacco and people with limited access to medical care— such as rural residents— at a particularly high risk,” Dr. Warner says.“ Having a robust outpatient referral system can reduce the amount of time until we can see patients, expedite treatment and decrease emergency room visits, thereby lowering costs for the healthcare system.”
Comprehensive Care for PAD PAD affects more than 12 million Americans, according to the American Heart Association, and is one of the most common conditions the vascular surgery team treats. The team offers conservative treatments ranging from risk factor modification, such as tobacco cessation and hypertension control, to statin and antiplatelet therapy.
When patients need an invasive intervention, the latest endovascular procedures are available, along with bypass surgery if necessary.
“ We have drug-coated balloons and drugeluting stents, which help keep treated blood vessels open longer,” says Thelinh Nguyen, MD, vascular surgeon at Renown Surgery Care.“ We can also use Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy to treat calcified lesions. Previously, we didn’ t have a good tool for treating heavily calcified lesions.”
Pioneering Step Dr. Warner brings expertise in complex aortic surgery, particularly endovascular treatment of complex aortic aneurysms. Recently, he performed a first-of-its-kind procedure for Renown Health, adding to an already robust roster of available therapies.
“ I performed Renown Health’ s first physician-modified endograft for a complex abdominal aortic aneurysm in January, which was a complete success,” Dr. Warner says.“ It helped fulfill my goal of bringing complex endovascular aortic surgery to northern Nevada, as many patients would otherwise need to travel out of state for this type of care.”

DISPELLING A MISCONCEPTION ABOUT PAD TREATMENT
Peripheral artery disease( PAD) treatment isn’ t one size fits all. Renown Surgery Care vascular surgeons tailor therapy to fit each patient’ s needs.
“ It is a misconception that every patient with PAD would need an invasive intervention,” says Thelinh Nguyen, MD, vascular surgeon at Renown Surgery Care.“ The only patients who need invasive intervention are those whose claudication severely interferes with their daily activities or lifestyle, or who have limb pain at rest or nonhealing ulcerations of their extremities.”
