Surgery’ s Growth Trajectory

The addition of a pair of general surgeons enhances northern Nevadans’ access to surgical services.

RENOWN SURGERY CARE’ S RECENT EXPANSION has allowed it to include nearly every surgical specialty. While the group continues performing procedures at Renown Regional Medical Center in central Reno, its general surgeons also now take cases at Renown South Meadows Medical Center in burgeoning south Reno. Two new experts have helped make this increased surgical reach possible.
Jahanara Graf, MD, FACS
establish a surgery residency.
Expanding Essential Care Fellowship-trained minimally invasive surgeon Siobhan Luce, MD, joined Renown Surgery Care in September 2025, eager to be part of a growing practice and help
“ Having surgeons available to a community is critical for overall public health,” Dr. Luce says.“ A common misconception is that surgery is a specialty service only available to those with easy access to healthcare or significant financial resources. On the contrary, surgery is primary care and should be available in every community.”
Dr. Luce brings skills in bariatric surgery, complex abdominal wall reconstruction and foregut surgery.
“ One of my favorite operations is a hiatal hernia repair and fundoplication,” she says.“ I love the anatomy involved. The operation occurs in the abdomen and partially in the chest, so the surgeon needs absolute focus to be successful when working near so many critical structures.”
‘ Breadth of Expertise’ Like Dr. Luce, general surgeon Jahanara Graf, MD, FACS, joined Renown Surgery Care last September, bringing a deep skill set to the practice. Shaped by mentors who valued surgical versatility, Dr. Graf takes pride in her ability to perform a wide variety of procedures.
“ Renown Health excels at subspecialty and cancer surgery, but there was a significant need in the community for breadand-butter general surgery for benign diseases,” Dr. Graf says.“ Previously, patients may have had to wait to see a surgeon who performs complex cancer operations just to have a procedure for a benign condition. I bring a breadth of expertise in treating benign pathologies that affect quality of life, like hernias, gallbladders, hemorrhoids and diverticular disease, making surgery more readily available to patients.”
COMPLEX ABDOMINAL WALL RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM TAKES SHAPE
As Renown Surgery Care expands, so do its capabilities. These include complex abdominal wall reconstruction for hernias. Good candidates for these procedures include patients with large hernias( 4 centimeters or more) or multiple hernias along an incision. The general surgeons recently began performing reconstructions using an open approach. They plan to transition to robotic surgery as the program grows.
“ Hernias aren’ t typically life-threatening, but they’ re a quality-of-life issue for patients,” says Jahanara Graf, MD, FACS, general surgeon at Renown Surgery Care.“ For a patient in rural northern Nevada to have to go to one of the large abdominal wall reconstruction programs in the Bay Area is a big ask. Now, they can have this procedure locally.”
