Advancing Bariatric Surgery

Renown Health’ s bariatric surgery program offers a transformative solution for individuals struggling with obesity.
Alexander L. Ayzengart, MD
RENOWN HEALTH HAS OFFERED bariatric surgery for about two decades, and it continues to lead the way in the region with minimally invasive procedures that offer a faster recovery time. In 2025, Renown Health will install a fifthgeneration robotic system, making these surgeries even safer and more effective.
“ In the next few months, we’ ll have the most advanced robotic technology available in the world,” says Alexander L. Ayzengart, MD, MPH, FACS, FASMBS, robotic bariatric and gastroesophageal surgeon at Renown Health.“ This machine will provide a better technical approach when we perform the newest procedures available, such as single anastomosis gastric bypass, which is not available at any other hospital in northern Nevada.”
A Network of Support, Start to Finish Renown Health offers a multidisciplinary approach to bariatric surgery, with care that extends months before and after a procedure.
“ You don’ t just show up, get an operation and leave,” Dr. Ayzengart says.“ Our team includes surgeons, primary care physicians, bariatric medicine physicians, dietitians, psychologists, exercise physiologists, sleep medicine physicians, gastroenterologists and physical therapists who provide preoperative evaluation and postoperative care on multiple levels.”
Renown Health is one of the few centers in the state that has all the providers in one place. Together, this network can help manage comorbidities and complications of being overweight, such as sleep apnea, hypertension and diabetes.
“ We’ re able to provide this care more effectively and more efficiently, as opposed to patients trying to establish care with different practices,” Dr. Ayzengart says.“ We also are in constant communication, working toward the same goal – better health for every patient.”
Renown Health also offers complex bariatric surgeries, including revisional surgery to treat complications of previous operations and surgery for patients who are morbidly obese or who have significant medical comorbidities such as lung, heart or liver issues.
“ The most important thing is to not delay surgery, if a patient needs it,” Dr. Ayzengart says.“ Medical comorbidities of weight loss progressively get worse with age, and as a patient’ s weight increases.”

NONSURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS
Not every patient who wants to lose weight is a good candidate for bariatric surgery. Renown Health offers nonsurgical weight loss options for patients whose insurance may not cover surgery or who want to try less invasive options. From glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists to comprehensive support for lifestyle changes, the bariatric team provides multidisciplinary care for every patient.
