VISION PROBLEMS OFTEN REQUIRE treatment beyond glasses or contacts. Renown Health now provides advanced ophthalmology care, including surgery, for children and adults with a wide range of concerns.
“ Many disorders, from premature birth to multiple sclerosis to stroke, can affect visual systems,” says Mitchell Strominger, MD, fellowship-trained attending surgeon in pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology and ocular motility at Renown Health.“ Even common health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes and thyroid disease can cause vision problems that need surgery.”
Care for the Littlest Eyes Dr. Strominger treats comprehensive eye concerns that affect children and adolescents, including:
• Amblyopia
• Congenital eye abnormalities
• Conjunctivitis and other infections
• Double vision
• Strabismus( eye crossing or wandering)
• Trauma
“ I specialize in eye muscle surgery to put the eyes straight,” Dr. Strominger says.“ Sometimes the surgery is needed due to a congenital condition, but I can also repair double vision caused by an eye socket fracture.”
Care for Adult and Aging Eyes Dr. Strominger also offers eye muscle surgery for adults.
“ Wandering eye can get worse as you get older, and other neurologic issues such as brain tumors or aging can cause changes in the eye,” Dr. Strominger says.“ Many people will reach their 60s and suddenly have double vision or trouble coordinating the two eyes together, but eye muscle surgery can correct this.”
Thyroid disorders can cause eye muscles to thicken, also causing double vision. After thyroid levels are stabilized, eye muscle surgery can restore normal sight. However, patients who don’ t need surgery can also receive expert care.
“ We have just added another neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr. Meari Taguchi, who only sees adult patients,” Dr. Strominger says.“ She is also fellowship-trained and specializes in treating idiopathic intracranial hypertension.”
Amblyopia affects
2 % to 4 %
of children.
Up to 5 % of people—
15 MILLION IN THE U. S.
— experience strabismus.
Around 1 in 100 people in the U. S. have Graves’ disease, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
Up to 50 % of those patients will experience thyroid eye disease.
Dr. Strominger encourages referrals for patients of all ages.
“ We’ re highly trained, we love our patients, we love working with children and families, and we provide some of the best care in the United States,” Dr. Strominger says.“ I think there’ s a feeling that you can’ t get advanced ophthalmology care in Reno, but that’ s simply no longer true.”
