e-regio Together with goetzpartners we have developed our future growth strategy as a joint company and have prepared our merger operationally. By continuously involving all company divisions, we have managed, together with goetzpartners, to implement the integration activities jointly with employees of both companies in a positive atmosphere. Increasing competition in the energy industry is forcing municipal and regional utility companies to cooperate more. e-regio and ene, two municipal utilities in North Rhine-Westphalia, decided to join their forces in a merger to achieve economies of scale and synergies and set the course for future, sustainable growth. goetzpartners supported the municipal utilities e-regio and ene in their merger process. The goal was to develop a growth strategy for the joint future and to ensure a smooth operational transition for the start of the new organization (‘Day-1- Readiness’). In joint strategy workshops with the executives of both companies, the strategic goals of the new company were concretized and strategic initiatives along existing and new business models were developed to realize these goals. Together with the responsible managers, goetzpartners evaluated the goals qualitatively and quantitatively and prepared their implementation by defining concrete measures. The subsequent implementation of these measures was continuously accompanied by goetzpartners. Parallel to developing a joint growth strategy, all necessary operative tasks were structured and prioritized in an overall program. Along all functions and areas, responsible persons from both companies were defined, who then successively implemented the more than 350 milestones. In weekly sprint meetings, progress was discussed and the need for decisions prepared, which were then decided by the management in regular steering committees. This approach and the use of a project management tool enabled efficient and transparent control. To bring all stakeholders on board during the merger phase, the progress of the program was regularly communicated in townhall events. The parallel implementation of strategy development and merger preparation enabled the companies to be prepared for their common future well in advance of ‘Day 1’. The formation of cross-organizational teams and the active involvement of managers in all topics was also critical to success. Any (typical) challenges in the operational start-up phase could thus be minimized. e-regio and ene have successfully completed the merger, thus bundling forces in the region for sustainable growth.
