From the Publisher’s Desk Summer is a great time of year to take a step back from the everyday routine of life and re- charge. We all do it. Vacations, extended weekends, holidays, the summer is a fantastic time to hit pause and regroup. And regrouping is a necessary thing. It helps us to focus, revaluate and evolve. In fact, evolution is a large part of the creative experience. Think about it, much of the culture we experience examines concepts and issues that aren’t themselves new. Many of the live stage plays we see season in and season out have been performed for decades and yet the most innovative companies find new and enlightening ways of sharing their content. For art to survive it must evolve with the society it serves. This summer Clef Notes ex- amines that evolution that marshals the arts we indulge onward, expanding and growing, pushing society to grow with it. Take fashion, for example. The field is always evolving, incorporating new design and function once considered irrelevant, but today textiles have begun to emerge in kind of marriage with technology. And so begins the era of wearable: clothing, accessories, apparel laden with the latest science en- abling the wearer to do more, expand the senses and even warn of danger. The Museum of Science and Industry has launched an exhibition that ex- plores wearable technology and what it means for our lives, not tomorrow or some point in the far odd future, but today. We preview the new show and how Wired to Wear at the Museum of Science and Industry features the latest wearable innovations including prosthetics and prototypes it drives forward the museum’s mission hands-on approach to that support the wearer's health and lifestyle. science, driving their goal of helping visitors experience the future. We also profile Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s summer series, which presents the work of three cutting edge choreographers firmly ensconced within the vanguard of modern dance today. We look at the evolution of modern dance and Hubbard Street’s uncanny artis- tic and technical dexterity for showcasing every permutation of the evolution that modern dance is to the field. And finally, we talk with Greek violinist Areta Zhulla, the newest member of the historic Juilliard String Quartet, a symbol of the acclaimed ensemble’s own evolution, Zhulla’s ap- pointment to first chair has created for very first time in their history a perfect male female balance working JSQ and at such an early stage in her career promises to factor consider- ably into her own evolution as an artist. That is just the tip of the iceberg of the evolution of Chicago culture represented in this issue. But don’t take my word for it, dive in and explore what Chicago’s summer cultural season has to offer. Here’s hoping it will inspire you to get out and indulge a little bit of artistic evolution of your own. Sincerely, D.
