It never ceases to amazes me how many different cultural initiatives a city like Chicago can foster season after season . Of course , with a diverse population that eagerly supports arts offerings spanning the spectrum of idioms out there , it ’ s not so much a surprise that cultural ideas are supported here . It ’ s just surprising , I suppose , that so many different arts initiatives are launched in the first place . You see , it takes quite the daring spirit to pursue a life in the arts in the first place , and spearheading a cultural initiative requires the ability to take on the risk that the majority of others so often shun , all for a larger purpose .
This summer , returning to the Harris Theater stage is a unique collaboration between Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and The Second City called The Art of Falling . The culmination of a mutual desire on the part of two very different cultural organizations to branch out beyond their own comfort zones and create new , unique work , The Art of Falling pays tribute to the kind of risk taking that cultural leaders take every single day . It also paid dividends , back in 2014 when it debuted , in the form new audiences for both troupes and critical acclaim , fostering new possibilities none of us would have to benefit from were it not for the creative minds behind both organizations and their propensity to think ( and step ) outside of the box .
Our Jordan Reinwald delves into the fascinating story of how the project came to be and what audiences have in store in this summer ’ s production of the innovative show .
In reality , stepping out beyond one ’ s comfort zone is
Above : Hubbard Street dancer Alice Klock in Second to Last from Hubbard Street + The Second City ' s The Art of Falling ( photo by Todd Rosenberg ). something people are forced to do every day . In fact , many see it as a healthy step that should be encouraged and not avoided . But we all know how much people like their comfort zones .
Fortunately , for Chicago audiences , we have all those inspiring creative trailblazers who get up every day to broaden their comfort zones and inspire us by their work to defy our own so that , perhaps , just perhaps , we might take the leap and do the same and see what dividends taking risks in our own lives can provide .
Happy musing !
