On Christmas Day 1881, the first train came to Cleburne from Dallas. Just six months later on June 6, 1882, Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe Railway completed the purchase of the rail line from Dallas to Cleburne. Early in 1882 the first passenger train arrived in Cleburne and rail travel began in earnest. The trains still run today on the Texas Eagle route connecting Los Angeles and Chicago. Cleburne is one of 43 stops along the way. Cleburne ranks No. 17 among most popular train destinations in the region. It also ranks No. 10 in the region in terms of the number of destinations that connect to Cleburne via train service. On average seven
direct daily train trips serve Cleburne.
Cleburne was chosen to become the home to Santa Fe Railway’ s largest shop facility in the nation. Cleburne had become a railroad town employing up to 2,000 in the next 15 years. Santa Fe was Cleburne’ s largest employer for years. Cleburne has strong ties with the Fort Worth & Western Railroad, which services the city’ s Industrial Park on the north side of Cleburne.

The Cleburne Intermodal Transportation Depot at 206 N. Border St. was built in 1999 and serves Amtrak trains and is the office for CLE- TRAN, the local bus transit.
