Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans, LA is following in California’s footsteps by signing an executive order to put in motion the city's first "Climate Action Strategy."

The main goal is a to have a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas pollution in the city by the year 2030. New Orleans is going to try and help rising temperatures and to fight erosion. "In New Orleans, we face a triple threat: subsidence, coastal erosion and sea level rise," Landrieu said. "If unchecked, New Orleans, like many coastal cities, will be forced to retreat. This strategy will help us transition to a low-carbon economy that not only helps manage our climate risk, but also creates new businesses, jobs and wealth." This climate plan states that they want to have a 50 percent increase in non-automobile trips through the city by overhauling the transit system and to make bicycling more accessible.

This announcement by Mayor Landrieu shows that cities are fighting against climate change on their own. Mayors from all around the country, are joining New Orleans in pledging that “We’re Still In,” and are developing climate action and resiliency plans of their own, and joining the country's 347 Climate Mayors. As Mayor Landrieu stated in the wake of the announcement of the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris agreement: “As a matter of fact, we will do what we have to on our own to make sure that we protect jobs, protect our national security, and protect the environment—all of which we think fold hand in hand with each other.” With its new Climate Action Strategy, New Orleans is demonstrating this commitment to stand with its communities, to stand with its peers, to act on climate.
