Smart technology is not only capable of making our lives easier, but is also capable of improving quality of life for many. Everyday objects are using renewable energy and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities to progress toward a more sustainable future.

Recently, notable companies like Big Belly Solar, ThinkPhi and ClearWorld are making waves with their new technologies. Big Belly Solar’s garbage compacting trash cans have effectively reduced the number of pickups that sanitation workers need to do, as well as the amount of garbage that goes into a landfill. ThinkPhi’s “inverted umbrellas” use green energy to produce clean drinking water from rainfall. ClearWorld’s RetroFlex panels are helping to improve safety and resiliency in their many applications. With a battery capable of storing 8 days of off-grid power, ClearWorld is bringing solutions to rural and low-income residents.

Without these emerging technologies and smart city applications, many of the aforementioned residents of rural areas would not have access to the energy storage that they rely on. IoT technologies make it possible for ClearWorld to harness natural resources and use them to their maximum potential.
