THE SMART HOME SECURITY REVOLUTION

Karl Wooley , Head of Product Management , discusses the benefits of smart home security , the standards it must comply with , and why Yale is leading the way with new product innovations

The days when smart home technology was a relative luxury have long passed . Now , smart devices are an integral part of our everyday lives , with approximately 45 percent of UK households owning a smart device in 2022 and that number growing rapidly .

Security is sometimes seen as a market that is resistant to new smart security products , particularly as homeowners seem reluctant to give up the traditional lock and key . However , that view is rapidly being overtaken , with smart security products achieving an ever-greater share of the smart home tech market .
Smart security is increasing , and our industry standards are developing and establishing to meet this growing trend . Yale has been at the forefront of this security revolution from the very start , selling smart door locks since 2010 and developing a huge portfolio of smart locks and associated smart security products .
THE BENEFITS OF SMART SECURITY
Smart home security enhances the safety , convenience , and efficiency of modern living . Central among its benefits is the ability to monitor and control home security remotely through smartphones or other devices , allowing homeowners to keep an eye on their property in real-time , receive alerts about suspicious activities , and interact with visitors via smart doorbells and cameras .
Another advantage is the ability to integrate various security devices – such as smart locks , alarms , cameras , and sensors – using a central platform . This creates a smart security ecosystem , for example , via the Yale Home app , ensuring they work together to streamline users ’ interaction with their smart security products . This
provides tremendous convenience and efficiency .
In addition , smart home security systems are generally easier and less labour-intensive to install , as their reliance on wireless technology and Wi-Fi means there is less hardwiring required . Standards are a vital part of the home security industry , but when it comes to smart security , they are arguably even more important as a reassurance that the products will keep homes secure .
In 2022 , SBD introduced the ‘ Secure Connected Device ’ ( SCD ) accreditation scheme in line with government legislation for companies providing Internet of Things ( IoT ) -connected products . Without the appropriate levels of security , any internet-connected device or app is at risk of letting cyber criminals access and steal personal data . The SCD accreditation ensures that devices meet rigorous security requirements , offering assurance to consumers .
One of the crucial standards that smart home security products must meet is PAS24 , which is needed to comply with building regulations . A minimum standard covering composite , hinged , sliding , and
bi-folding doors , plus all opening windows , PAS24 consists of a set of tests designed to assess the security of doors and windows against attacks from opportunistic burglars .
BS6375-2 is another standard that sets performance requirements for the strength and operation of manually operated windows and doors . It tests for operating forces , mechanical strength , resistance to static torsion , racking , load-bearing capacity of safety devices , impact resistance , and resistance to continual opening and closing .
In addition , TS621:2018 is the recognised standard for smart locks by the British Standard Institute ( BSI ), and requires smart locks to meet stringent mechanical security requirements .
This is not to mention other standards that all smart home security products must comply with , whether Restriction of Hazardous Substances ( RoHS ) or relating to the Internet of Things ( IoT ) or GDPR .
