PROUD SPONSOR OF INDUSTRY NEWS FROMTHEEDITOR For your consideration The nights may be getting darker but there’s some glitz and glamour on the horizon as the industry prepares for award season. » » BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS LETTER THE clocks will have ‘fallen back’ (with darker nights creeping in), Halloween will have been and gone, trick and treaters will have bled us dry, Bonfire Night will have had our dogs and cats hiding in fear, and most scary of all (for me) Christmas with the in-laws is one month closer… But, while the winter months mean most of us will be leaving for work and returning home in the dark for the foreseeable future, on a lighter note, our attention can be turned to awards season. For entertainment purposes, this means some much better films in the cinema with publishers purposely holding back releases to coincide with the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA considerations, but outside of Hollywood, (even more excitingly), the G Awards will be taking place at the end of the month, along with countless individual businesses’ end of year events across the industry. And while it’s easy to be cynical and think that an awards show is just an excuse to buy a new ball gown and dust off the dickie bow, neck a few fizzes, and dance to some disco, at a deeper level I think it will always be important to take time to appreciate the achievements and celebrate the success of our peers. Of course, we should always deliver ‘award-winning’ service and prize- worthy products, but even if we don’t win or even enter a competition, where’s the harm in spending every day at work as if we have. In many a fashion magazine, we are told to ‘dress for the job you want, not the one you have’; I’m not sure how much I agree with that but I do understand the ‘mind over matter’ attitude that I believe the first person to coin that phrase was probably trying to get at. So I say, ‘make every day at work the same as the morning after you’ve just won an award’ and by that I don’t mean an Irn Bru and a fried egg butty for breakfast (or whatever your hangover cure of choice may be), but to walk in each day with your head held high, your best foot forward, and that sense of pride that makes everyone around you do the same.
