Manhattan building keeps its cool

WHEN THE DESIGNER OF 115 Delancey Street, part of the £ 770 million Essex Crossing development in New York City’ s Lower East Side, decided to front the whole of the landmark building with a fivestorey-high glazed atrium space, it was clear that advanced glazing would be needed to control the climate inside.
Andy McDowell, commercial director at Pilkington United Kingdom Limited said:“ When it comes to designing buildings that look open and inviting to passers-by, there is nothing better than a fully glazed exterior. However, any building in which this is the case will suffer from the risk of overheating.
“ In the case of 115 Delancey Street, the Pilkington Suncool™ 70 / 40 Pro T helps to prevent 60 percent of the heat from the sun pass through the glass. This will translate directly into energy savings for the scheme’ s occupiers in the form of reduced air conditioning and ventilation bills – not to mention greater comfort for anyone inside the building.”
This clarity was increased further by specifying Pilkington Optiwhite™ a true lowiron glass, which removes the distinct green tint present in all standard float glass, giving a more natural colour balance for anyone looking through the glass.

CORNWALL GLASS HAS SUPPLIED more than 1000 IGUs for the specialist refurbishment of Brighton’ s iconic Grand Hotel. Working with David Salisbury Commercial; appointed by main contractor SEH Commercial, the 18-month project involved more than 450 windows and doors.
The building was originally completed in 1864, re-built in part after the 1984 bombing, and has seen a multitude of remedial works along the way.
Joe Marsh, David Salisbury Commercial’ s Account Manager said:“ No two rooms are quite the same so each window and door was bespoke. The other challenge was achieving the right balance from a conservation perspective. We needed a supply partner that would work closely with us but which manufactured IGUs to the exacting standards a high degree of quality that we needed”
Cornwall Glass manufactures IGUs at three locations throughout the South West including St Austell, Highbridge plus a purpose-built IGU facility at Plymouth. The company supplied almost 1,000 high performing double-glazed units to David Salisbury Commercial over the project period. Specified to deliver a U-value of 1.0W / m2K, the argon-filled units, were manufactured from 4mm TGH Planitherm One with a 16mm cavity and white warm-edge spacer bar.
