IN THE FRAME: Bodmin cottage
bay window wins ‘top of the
shots’ in photo competition
» » RECENTLY, TIMBER WINDOW
specialists, Wooden Windows ran a photo
competition, encouraging customers to share
their window installations so the company
could see their stunning product in situ.
The results were incredible with specifiers,
joiners, architects, diy-ers and more, sending
photos of their new Wooden Windows sitting
in pride of place.
It was a tough job choosing top ‘shot’, but
the winner was a couple from Cornwall who
created a beautiful bay window to complement
their cottage and to help them take advantage
of the breath-taking views.
Oak Cottage is a former stable block in
Bodmin from the 1800s and is now used as
a holiday cottage. Mr and Mrs Hitchcock,
owners of Oak Cottage, initially contacted
Wooden Windows looking for a high-quality
bay window which was to be a new addition
to the North elevation.
Mr Alec Hitchcock says: “We thought,
wouldn’t it be lovely if we could put a window
in there and take advantage of those views?
So, we gained planning permission with the
help of an architect and began our search for a
made to measure wooden window.”
Using the architect’s drawings as a starting
point, the Wooden Windows team supplied a
quote including details of materials and finish.
The new window proposed by the architect
was a 1.5m wide bay which allows maximum
light into the property and provides a view of
the landscape down the valley.
The window design had to match and
seamlessly fit in with the existing windows
without openings for maximum security. The
window has traditional bars and is painted
white with trickle vents. The projection of the
bar meets the eaves of the roof and it’s finished
with double glazed glass to resist noise from the
adjacent road.
The window was made in softwood with
a 70mm full cill and trickle vent in the front
section to match the existing windows. The
traditional bars were created using duplex and
bonded bars to increase the glass size and make
the most out of the natural light. The design
was provided as a detailed CAD drawing giving
Mr Hitchcock a clear idea of how the window
would look which he swiftly approved and
ordered.
The bay window was manufactured in the
Wooden Windows workshop based in the
Midlands, in pine (redwood) and primed ready
for painting. It was then fully assembled ready
for installation on site along with the glazed
units and bonded bars.
The finished window was delivered promptly
to site and fitted by their chosen builder along
with the lintel and lower supporting structure.
Runner up of the photo competition went
to Philip Clarke who designed his own outdoor
office space and used Wooden Windows to
keep the space light and airy.
Opting for solid timber French doors with
sidelight windows in Pine (Redwood), Mr
Clarke achieved his desired result.
Mr Clarke wanted to allow maximum light
into the space and create a warm, draft free
environment. So, with the help of the team at
Wooden Windows, he started to design a pair
of French doors with large double-glazed panels
and full-length sidelight windows. These were
made with a 70mm cill and primed ready for
painting on site.
The windows and doors were made in the
workshop to the exact measurements supplied
by the builder, before being delivered to site
with matt black furniture and made-to-measure
double-glazed units.
Both the windows and doors were then
painted in light grey on the outside to match
the exterior, and a bright white on the inside.
Once complete, the builder fitted everything
into place.
