PARTNERSHIP REVIVES HISTORIC HOSPITAL SITE
More than 700 high quality windows and doors were supplied and installed by Global
UPVC at a prestigious development on the historic Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital site.
»»The Beeches Village was
delivered by a partnership of housing
association United Welsh, Caerphilly County
Borough Council, housing developer Lovell,
the Welsh Health Service and the Caerphilly
Miners Community Group. It has created 82
homes for sale and for rent, all with Legend
casement windows and French doors from
Synseal fabricator Global UPVC.
Managing director Jon Dowse credits much
of the company’s ongoing success in the
commercial market to the Legend system:
“We use only Legend and have done for
over ten years,” says Jon. “So many of our
clients keep coming back and inviting us to
bid for more work that we can hardly keep
up with the tenders. To me, that is the best
possible commendation I could hope for
from any system. It’s a good looking window
that performs well but also from our point
of view, it is easy to manufacture. Our work
is mainly in new-build but we do a bit of
everything and Legend suits us whatever we
are doing.”
Built in 1923, The Miners’ Hospital was
paid for by the miners of the Rhymney Valley
after they each put aside 6d out of their
weekly wage of 12s 6d to raise the £30,000
needed. It closed in 2011 but the original
building has been preserved as a community
centre for the Caerphilly Miners Community
Group. The development also created five
apprenticeships and was Development of
the Year in the Welsh Housing Awards. It
also won the Residential category in the
2015 RICS (Royal Institution for Chartered
Surveyors) Awards for Wales.

Impactful thinking
»»Bohle has launched a new
and flexible disposable glass corner protector
delivering enhanced product protection for
processed glass.
Suitable for use with 8mm and 10mm
glass, the Bohle Blue Corner Protector is
manufactured from a specially developed
plastic compound designed to absorb energy
without cracking.
Performance is further enhanced through
the use of a textured surface designed to
dissipate the energy of impact, while innovative
impact absorbing inserts deliver additional
protection.
Dave Broxton, managing director, Bohle,
said: “The compound the Bohle Blue Corner
Protector is moulded from has been developed
to strike exactly the right balance between
rigidity, to prevent perforation and the
flexibility needed to dispel the energy created
by impact.
“We have been able to enhance its impact
absorbing performance further by creating a
dimpled surface texture that allows energy to

be dispelled more efficiently than a flat surface
and through the use of internal fillets, which
collapse in on themselves to protect the glass
from damage.”
‘we see it being used with
processed products’
Bohle developed the Blue Corner
Protector in response to customer demand
for a disposable but enhanced performance,
corner protector for use with higher
value and in particular, processed glass,
manufacturing the prototype following
a five month research and development
programme.
“This is a mid-range product”, continued
Dave. “We see it being used with processed
products, which have already been drilled,
tempered, or sand blasted. It’s much more
robust than a standard offer corner protector
but is being released at a price point, which
means that it remains a disposable item.”
