DIRECTOROFTH EMONTH Director of the month: Brett Barratt This month, founder and managing director of Warrior Doors, Brett Barratt describes his day for us, from his daily factory walkabout to research and development, from his home hobbies and pet projects, and why he hasn’t had a computer for four years… NAME/JOB TITLE: Brett Barratt, Managing Director, Warrior Doors Ltd WHEN DID YOU JOIN (OR START) THE COMPANY? I started Warrior Doors alongside my wife – and fellow Warrior Doors Director – Ann in April 1997. Over 20 years on we now employee 36 people from our base in Birmingham. DESCRIBE YOUR WORKING DAY? Flat out - I sometimes feel like a drowning man. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed there is always a work-related challenge to solve, and I must be alert to that. WHAT IS YOUR WORKSPACE LIKE? (TIDY/ORGANISED ETC.) I like to keep my desk tidy and organised with minimal amount of clutter; a special thank you to our cleaner. FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU GET TO YOUR DESK? Once I’ve arrived at my desk, I like to take a walkaround our office and factory and say good morning to all the staff. BEST BUSINESS DECISION IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE? In the early years of Warrior Doors, we predominantly manufactured products for the social housing sector. As we’ve grown, we’ve invested more in R&D which has helped us develop, enabling us to provide more bespoke solutions tailored to different sectors. WHAT WEBSITES HELP YOU? Social media sites LinkedIn and Pinterest are always a great source of inspiration for me. I love the way LinkedIn has revolutionised networking, and I find it a great way to keep in touch with colleagues and business partners. FAVOURITE ROLE MODELS AND WHY? MOST USEFUL BUSINESS TOOL? (SAT NAV/APPS ETC.) HOW DO YOU UNWIND? The most useful business tools are my iPhone and iPad. I haven’t had a computer on my desk for four years. Sir Winston Churchill. He was able to perform the longest meeting in 20 minutes (I’ve got a long way to go). Outside of work I like to spend time on my various pet projects. I have recently completed a pizza oven that has taken two years, making it the most expensive pizza oven on Pinterest. Warrior Doors is a Birmingham-based manufacturer of high-security door solutions. Typing ‘Warrior Doors’ in the Secured by Design website’s approved products search box will throw up no less than 26 results. Warrior Doors independently tests its doors to incredibly stringent and robust criteria, then have them certified to LPS 1175 or LPS 2081 standard by BRE, the industry’s leading body; meaning specifiers, planners, and DOCOs (Designing Out Crime Officers) can have complete peace of mind when choosing a door that is fit for purpose, whether the planned project is for a high-end jewelers or a communal housing entrance. As manufacturers of high-security doors for over 20 years, Warrior Doors’ experience combined with innovation for product design and development means that its products offer maximum security without compromising on overall aesthetic or light getting inside to a building.
