GLASS&SEALEDUNITS Just wait till you hear the difference! Granada Secondary Glazing is giving visitors to Greenbuild a chance to hear, as well as see, the capabilities of secondary glazing. REVOLUTIONARY SWITCHABLE GLASS »»Clayton Glass has signed an exclusive deal to bring the revolutionary switchable SageGlass to the UK residential market, which will be marketed as SMARTGLASS® Dynamic powered by SageGlass, on the back of its hugely successful conservatory glass brand. ‘this new genre of glass has been hugely popular in the USA’ SageGlass is a dynamic electrochromic, tintable glass which is perfect for conservatory and lantern roofs, along with bi-folding and large patio doors and of course windows. This new genre of glass has been hugely popular in the USA and this exclusive deal will help open up the UK market for switchable glass, at a price that is now commercially viable. The launch of SMARTGLASS® Dynamic will enable homeowners to control sunlight without shades or blinds, so they can manage glare and heat while maintaining a connection to the world outdoors, all from the use of a Smartphone app, available for iOS and Android devices. One of the most interesting applications will be for bi-folding doors where solar heat gain and glare are particular issues and the product launch will see the latest generation rooflights adopting the product through key partners. The electrochromic coating on SageGlass consists of five layers of ceramic material. Applying a low voltage of electricity darkens the coating as lithium ions and electrons transfer from one electrochromic layer to another electrochromic layer. By reversing the voltage polarity, this causes the ions and electrons to return to their original layer, causing the glass to return to its clear state. This reaction is controlled through a very low (less than 5V DC) voltage power supply. C O M »»The Dinningtonbased manufacturer will feature a custom-built ‘Traffic Soundbox’ on its stand, using ambient noises typically experienced by its commercial and residential customers, to demonstrate Granada products’ unique soundproofing capabilities. Noise reduction is one of the key features that attract customers to secondary glazing, complementing the cost and thermal insulation qualities that energy-efficient developers expect. The stringent noise and carbon emission legislation covering buildings such as schools and colleges brings the benefits into even greater focus, whilst the change of use of commercial property to residential, or expansion near airports, railway stations or roads is also bringing more attention to Granada’s expertise. Mike Latham, commercial sales director at Granada, believes the sound properties and quality of design play an important part in the attraction of secondary glazing, as the thermal insulation qualities become widely accepted. “The ‘Traffic Soundbox’ is a great way to demonstrate the fantastic properties of our products. Low frequency noise can result in actual vibration of the glazing, meaning the problem can get progressively worse. The general “rumble” of traffic noise, passing
