Hardware & Security operated repeatedly by a large number of different occupants over many years. It therefore needs to provide consistent performance while remaining straightforward and intuitive to use.
This is an area where our experience across European markets is particularly relevant. Tilt & turn systems are much more established in continental Europe, giving HOPPE extensive experience of the hardware requirements associated with these applications and the different considerations that come with them.
Our range includes the Atlanta 0530S / U26 TBT1 and Tôkyô 0710S / U26 TBT1 window handles. Both incorporate TBT1 functionality, allowing the handle to be locked in the tilted position and preventing it from being moved to the fully open position until it has been unlocked.
The Atlanta and Tokyo designs also provide flexibility in terms of appearance, with a range of finishes available to complement different window designs and interior schemes. This is important because hardware needs to perform its functional role while also fitting into the overall aesthetic of a residential development.
For specifiers, the choice of window handle can therefore involve much more than simply selecting a particular style or finish. The hardware can influence how occupants interact with the window every day, how ventilation is managed and how much control is available over the opening position.
There is also an important consideration around the different requirements of apartment developments compared with individual homes. In a multi-occupancy building, hardware may be subjected to considerably more frequent use and needs to provide reliable performance throughout its service life.
This makes it important to consider the complete window system, rather than looking at the hardware in isolation. The handle, locking mechanism and window need to work together to provide the required level of functionality, security and ease of use.
Although tilt & turn remains a relatively small part of the UK window market, the growth of higher-density housing creates an opportunity to consider whether its benefits could be more widely applicable.
We have already seen the advantages of the system across European markets, and the changing nature of residential development in the UK and Ireland means there is an opportunity for specifiers to consider whether those benefits could translate to more apartment applications here.
Ultimately, it comes down to giving occupants a window that is easy to operate while providing the level of control that modern buildings increasingly require. For developers and specifiers, it is about looking beyond the window itself and considering how the hardware can contribute to the safety, durability and everyday usability of the building.
As apartment living continues to influence the way new homes are designed, tilt & turn systems could have an increasingly important role to play – and the hardware supporting them will be an important part of that conversation.
