Ask a homeowner what they want from energy-efficient windows and doors and the answer is unlikely to begin with a U-value. They want to know whether their living room will feel warmer, whether they can sit beside the window without feeling cold, and whether replacing their windows and doors will help keep spiralling heating bills under control.
Others may want to reduce condensation or ensure that a new extension is comfortable throughout the year. These are the real-life concerns behind the technical questions, and they give installers a useful starting point for explaining the value of thermally efficient aluminium. U-values provide important evidence of performance, but connecting those figures to how people use their homes makes them far more meaningful.
A lower U-value indicates better insulation, helping installers compare products and recommend an appropriate specification. For the homeowner, however, the benefit is easier to understand when expressed in terms of the room they want to improve.
For example, a dining area beside ageing patio doors might be somewhere the family avoids in winter. A home office could feel uncomfortable despite the heating being on. In both cases, reducing heat loss through the windows and doors can help make the space more usable.
