A new glazing solution for year-round comfort
A new glazing solution developed by integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass, in conjunction with Guardian Glass and ToughGlaze, called ClimaGuard ® 365, offers installers a glazing option capable of delivering year-round comfort thanks to a revolutionary glass coating that is rarely used in residential window applications. We interviewed Ian Short, Managing Director of Morley Glass, to find out more.
Q. What is ClimaGuard ® 365?
ClimaGuard ® 365 is the result of a collaboration between Morley Glass, ToughGlaze and Guardian Glass which unlocks the potential for solar control glass technology to be used much more often in domestic projects. It provides another glass option for our Uni-Blinds ® integral blinds, representing an upgrade over standard low-e glass for IGUs in most windows and doors because of its ability to balance excellent thermal performance with reducing heat build-up on sunny days.
Q. Why is ClimaGuard ® 365 different?
It is mainly to do with taking a great product that’ s been on the fringes for 10-20 years – solar control glass – and making it fit for the 21st century. Key to this has been creating an efficient, reliable supply channel so that domestic installers have easy access to a type of glass that offers huge sales potential.
Until now, solar control glass has usually been associated with commercial and public sector projects or where a domestic customer has a very specific requirement. All that changes with ClimaGuard ® 365 because of the way we’ ve made the product accessible and affordable for projects large or small, assisted by the processing expertise of ToughGlaze. So whether you’ ve got a major contract for a housebuilder or a one-off window for a homeowner, ClimaGuard ® 365 is an option you can consider and rely on.
Most importantly, ClimaGuard ® 365 will help take solar control into the mainstream. In the same way that double glazing transformed the comfort and quality of the UK’ s homes in the 1970s and low-e glass took these benefits to the next level in the noughties, this new product represents the latest glass innovation because of how it builds on thermal efficiency to help make homes far more resilient to the effects of a warming climate.
Q. How does ClimaGuard ® 365 work? The glazing solution is based on the proven technology of Guardian SunGuard ® SuperNeutral SN75 glass, a product that builds on the performance capabilities of low-e glass by adding solar reflectivity to help reduce heat build-up in our homes when the sun is at its strongest.
The key to its performance is the glass’ s multi-functional double silver coating which offers exceptional selectivity solar protection on a neutral-looking glass. The coating’ s selectivity allows it to reflect excessive solar energy from the sun whilst being able to prevent heat loss through the glass at colder times – carefully balancing thermal insulation and solar gain.
Q. What cooling effect can homeowners expect from ClimaGuard ® 365?
On a bright, sunny day the temperature difference between the outside and inside of a window featuring ClimaGuard ® 365 can be up to 9 ° C. This was revealed in research by Group 14 Engineering, a respected sustainable building and energy consulting firm based in the US. So it’ s not just a theoretical heat reduction inside our homes – there is evidence to support this.
