Mortice Locks:

A Steady Replacement Market For Installers

For installers, there is always a place for the latest security technology, but much of the day-to-day trade remains rooted in something far more familiar- replacing locks that have reached the end of their working life.

Mortice locks are a good example. They may be an established part of the locksmith’ s toolkit, but the market for replacing worn, damaged or failed locks continues to provide a steady stream of work- particularly when customers want a straightforward replacement without changing the door or wider hardware.
For manufacturers and suppliers, that means ensuring the traditional mechanical lock remains readily available in the configurations and sizes that installers actually need.
Burg-Wächter’ s Sterling brand offers a comprehensive range of door and window security products, including three- and five-lever mortice deadlocks and sashlocks, as well as nightlatches and rim locks.
Dave Todd, Sales Director at Burg- Wächter UK, said,“ There is a tendency to focus on what’ s new in security, but replacement work remains a really important part of the locksmith market. A lock fails, wears out or needs upgrading, and the customer needs a suitable replacement.
“ For installers, having a range that covers those everyday requirements means they can respond quickly without having to look beyond their usual supplier.”
Part of a wider replacement market
Mortice locks should also be viewed as part of the wider mechanical door-security market rather than in isolation.
A customer may require a replacement mortice lock, but there are plenty of other scenarios where a locksmith could be supplying or replacing a nightlatch, rim lock, door bolt or associated hardware.
The right solution will depend on the existing installation, the level of security required and what the customer is trying to achieve.
This makes range breadth increasingly valuable. Sterling’ s portfolio covers a variety of door and window security applications, allowing installers to source different types of mechanical security from the same brand.
Dave said,“ The locksmith already knows the products and knows how they work. The important thing from our perspective is making sure we have the range available when they need it.
“ Mortice locks are one part of that, but so are nightlatches, rim locks and other door-security products. They all have a role in the replacement market.”
A choice of mortice options
Within the Sterling mortice range, three- and five-lever options are available in both deadlock and sashlock configurations, alongside bathroom locks.
The three-lever models provide an option for internal applications, while the five-lever range offers additional security features for applications where a higher level of protection is required. The five-lever locks incorporate features including anti-saw deadbolts, anti-pick curtains and box strikes.
The range is also available in 2.5in( 63mm) and 3in( 75mm) backsets, helping installers match replacement products to existing door configurations.
For a locksmith, that breadth of choice is ultimately about practicality- being able to identify the existing lock, determine what is required and select an appropriate replacement from a readily available range.
Keeping mechanical security relevant
While electronic access control and smart locking systems continue to develop, traditional mechanical security remains an important part of the market.
Indeed, replacement work can be one of the most dependable areas for installers because it is driven by necessity rather than technology cycles. A failed lock needs replacing regardless of what new products have entered the market.
Dave concluded,“ Mechanical locks aren’ t going away. There will always be doors with existing locks that need replacing, whether because they’ ve failed, become worn or the customer wants an upgrade.
“ For us, it’ s about supporting installers with a range that covers those requirements. Sterling gives them a straightforward choice across mortice locks and other familiar door-security products, helping them meet the needs of the replacement market.”
