Doors & Windows

Five Days: What Goes Into a Fast Turnaround

A five-day lead time can make a big difference to an installer. An order placed this week can be installed next week, helping keep jobs moving, getting installers paid sooner and, in some cases, getting them out of a difficult situation.

For Genius PVC Trade Frames, that turnaround starts long before an order reaches the factory floor. Sales & Marketing Director Karl Williamson explains what goes into making a five-day service possible.

“ We’ ve always been focused on turnaround,” says Karl.“ It’ s one of the things that matters most to our customers. They don’ t want to be waiting weeks for frames. They want to order them and know when they’ re going to arrive.”
It can also help when things don’ t quite go to plan.
Break-ins and emergency repair jobs are a good example. The quicker a replacement window or door can be made, the less time a property has to spend boarded up.
Then there are new-build projects, where one delay can quickly affect several other trades.
“ If the windows aren’ t there, it can hold everything else up,” Karl explains.“ You’ ve got plasterers and other trades waiting to come in, so a delay with the frames can become a much bigger problem for the installer.”
And sometimes it’ s simply a case of something being forgotten.
“ We all forget things,” says Karl.“ An installer might realise they’ ve missed a window off an order or need something they didn’ t originally allow for. If we can turn that around quickly, they can still get the job done when they said they would, without the customer ever knowing there was a problem.”
Keeping the stock moving
Genius holds large stocks of both white and foiled profile, and has recently increased its stockholding in a number of popular colours. That means many of the foils that are increasingly being requested by homeowners can now be supplied on the same five-day service.
“ Colour has become much more important,” says Karl.“ We’ ve seen that demand growing, so we’ ve increased the amount of coloured profile we’ re holding. There’ s no point having the capacity to manufacture quickly if you’ re then waiting for the profile to arrive.”
Once the order is in, a large team of factory operatives works across two shifts to keep production moving. The machinery is designed to handle the volume too,
including two Schirmer cutting centres.
Profile is delivered several times a week, while hardware deliveries are also kept moving so that production isn’ t held up waiting for components.
The factory itself has been set up with capacity in mind, but without becoming so large that it becomes difficult to keep track of what’ s happening.
“ We’ re big enough to handle the work, but we’ re still able to keep an eye on what’ s going through the factory,” says Karl.“ We can see where jobs are and what’ s happening with them.”
Every job is barcoded and tracked through the factory, giving the team visibility from production through to loading. Quality control and loading operate across both shifts, from 7am through to midnight.
That means the five-day lead time isn’ t simply about making frames quickly. They
still need to be checked, loaded and ready to go.
Getting them where they need to be
Genius operates a fleet of vehicles covering the UK, giving the business control over the last part of the process and helping it maintain the turnaround promised to installers.
Tom Weston, MD says that having the different parts of the operation working together is important:“ Everything works together because it HAS to.
“ There is no value in fabricating frames quickly for them to then sit in a bottle neck to be checked or loaded. We keep track of every job in the factory throughout every stage of its fabrication to enable us to keep everything moving right up to the point of being put on the vehicle.
“ This process allows us also to focus on those last minute, urgent jobs to provide reassurance to the customer that we are keeping their urgency flowing through the factory.” It’ s a straightforward approach, but there is a lot behind it.
“ We’ ve invested in the stock, the machinery, the people and the delivery side because we know how important turnaround is to our customers,” adds Karl.“ If an installer needs frames, they need them when we say they’ ll be there. That’ s what we’ re here to do.
“ We’ re always looking at how we can make things quicker and easier for our customers.”
