The‘ I’ in Industry – what business can teach us about ourselves
In January, I joined an online session led by a well-respected figure from our own industry. It was not about flashy marketing tactics or big business buzzwords, but it got me thinking about how we make decisions both for our companies and for ourselves.

» ONE IDEA THAT REALLY STUCK WITH ME WAS THAT times of change can sharpen focus. When everything around you is shifting, it forces you to be clearer about what really matters, where your energy is best spent, and which parts of your business or your own skills and routines could be improved.
It is a reminder that professional growth and personal development often go hand in hand. Just as a business needs to refine its processes or rethink its offer to stay relevant, we can reflect on the habits, skills, and relationships that make us more effective.
Another point that resonated was spotting opportunities where others might not look. In business, that might be streamlining a process, strengthening a long-term relationship, or finding a small innovation in your services. Personally, it could be investing time in a skill you have been meaning to develop, or simply being more deliberate about how you spend your time and energy. Progress, it seems, is not always about big leaps. It is often the small, thoughtful steps that build both professional reputation and personal confidence. One line that really stayed with me was“ do not disappear when you are busy.” It was said in a business sense, but it applies more widely too. Whether it is with customers, colleagues, or friends, staying present, visible, and connected is often when it matters most. It is the consistency, credibility, and trust you demonstrate every day. In the same way, personal growth comes from recognising your strengths, learning from experience, and building on what is already there.
I left the session feeling quietly encouraged. It was not about chasing trends or reinventing the wheel, but about paying attention, reflecting, and making small, deliberate choices. In a fast-moving industry like ours, the same applies personally as professionally. Steady, thoughtful actions build reputation, skill, and confidence over time.
