The Warm Homes Plan:

A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity for Installers

Andrew Scott, Founder and CEO of Purplex Marketing, explains why the government’ s £ 15bn investment is about to create a feeding frenzy in renewables- and asks whether your business is ready to diversify.

The government has just handed installers the biggest opportunity in decades.
The Warm Homes Plan has been rumoured for years and was finally announced last month. £ 15 billion is being pledged over five years to fund solar panels, heat pumps and battery storage across UK homes. They’ re calling it a“ rooftop revolution”- tripling the number of homes with solar and lifting a million people out of fuel poverty.
For installers across glass and glazing, this is a massive moment. The renewable sector is about to explode, and while the skills you already have put you in a prime position to take advantage, readying yourself for this market is going to take real effort.
Let’ s be clear about what’ s on the table.
Homeowners will get access to £ 7,500 grants for air source heat pumps through the extended Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which now runs until 2030. Low-income households can access up to £ 30,000 worth of free installations, including solar, batteries and insulation. And crucially, there will be interest-free or low-interest loans available for home upgrades.
It’ s a fundamental shift in how homes are heated and powered in this country.
The feeding frenzy is coming. Installers I speak to across the country are aware of what a huge opening this is. But here’ s the question: are you ready to diversify into it?
In my recent webinar, I talked about a simple framework for thinking about business growth. It’ s based on how you use your products and markets, and it breaks down into four strategies:
Squeeze: Maximise what you already have with existing customers and products.
Stack: Introduce new products to markets you already know.
Scale: Take proven products into new markets, regions or channels.
Shift: Launch completely new products into new markets- the highest risk approach.
The Warm Homes Plan is essentially a shift strategy. Yes, you’ re selling to homeowners you already understand. But this isn’ t just adding a new product line to your existing offering.
Selling renewables is different. You’ re talking about energy efficiency, long-term savings, government grants, loan applications, EPC ratings, and heat loss calculations. The installation itself is more complex, and the sales cycle is longer.
So, while some of your skills will transfer, this is a significant undertaking, but one that’ s becoming less optional. Here’ s what you need to think about.
First, training. Your team will need to learn new installation techniques, understand different compliance requirements, and get comfortable with technologies they haven’ t worked with before. That takes time and investment, but it’ s not insurmountable.
Second, operational capacity. Can your business handle higher-value, more complex installations? Do you have the project management capabilities, the cash flow, the supplier relationships?
Third, marketing. Once you have the above in place, can you credibly position yourself in the renewable sector? Do you have the messaging and the brand strength to win in this space? If not, your very next step should be bringing your brand and marketing up to speed.
Your answers to these questions are the difference between capitalising on this opportunity and watching it pass you by. Grants are already being distributed. Loans will follow. And your ability to diversify could become a bottleneck as demand ramps up over the next 12 to 24 months.
The businesses that move now and market themselves effectively will establish themselves as leaders in this space. The ones that wait will be playing catch-up in an increasingly crowded market.
It requires clearer positioning, better storytelling, and marketing that connects the dots between products rather than treating each one in isolation.
This is a once-in-a-generation shift. The government is backing it with serious money. Homeowners want it. The market is ready.
The only question left is whether you are.
