Whilst aluminium is infinitely recyclable, the reality is that most aluminium used in UK fenestration is still primary aluminium – which is produced via energy-intensive smelting, often using fossil-fuel energy grids overseas. This results in a high embodied carbon footprint at the point of manufacture, and as pressure grows to cut both operational and embodied carbon, the need for alternative solutions is clearer than ever.
PVCu, on the other hand, can be recycled up to ten times with no significant loss of performance, giving it a potential life span of more than 350 years.
