THE PRESSURE IS ON

Paul Higgins , Commercial Director of glass manufacturer TuffX , explains the need for installers and housebuilders to embrace next generation glass products sooner rather than later .

The 2025 deadline for the Future Homes Standard ( FHS ) is fast approaching and the window industry has its part to play . For anyone that is still unsure , the FHS is not a voluntary scheme or a nice-to-have scenario . The Standard is a set of guidelines that will complement Building Regulations to make sure new homes are built with improved energy efficiency . The aim of the standard is to ensure the construction sector plays its part in reducing carbon emissions , and with amendments to existing regulations Part F ( ventilation ) and Part L ( conservation of fuel and power ) it suggests carbon savings of 75 % should be possible , compared with properties built to existing regulations .

The new Labour government has pledged to deliver 1.5 million new homes over the next five years . New housing is desperately needed to tackle the Housing Crisis in the UK and this strategy should help boost growth in the sector , but there is still a question mark over how green these new properties will be . A Labour spokesperson has said that the new houses will meet the Future Homes Standard , but no detail has been provided on precisely how . Amidst controversy over the fact that housebuilders have benefited from significant financial savings when the Conservatives got rid of some of their planned low-carbon regulations , the
industry is waiting to see what announcements will come next from our new government .
Home upgrades Of course , the impact of housing on carbon emissions doesn ’ t just come from new homes . Existing homes need to be upgraded with better materials and technologies too . We are pleased to be able to offer a fantastic solution for installers and housebuilders alike . Our Glow bi-fold doors offer an upgrade on an already popular home improvement choice consisting of electrically heated double-glazing . Working in a similar way to underfloor heating , it is controlled by a thermostat so it can be turned on and off as needed and can generate temperatures up to 40 ° C .
Consumers are looking for year-round warm and cosy homes that don ’ t cost them the earth and are keen to make energy conscious choices . Glow radiates a comfortable heat into the room while reducing energy consumption and carbon use , and while lowering utility bills . Glow heated bi-fold doors can be used as a primary heat source or offer a great additional heat source in an otherwise colder extension or conservatory for example . And in the warmer months it continues performing with a U-value of 1.2 giving it optimum energy efficiency .
There is no compromise to aesthetics either with Glow bi-folding doors because they look just as stunning as any of our other bi-fold doors . The technology used to create the heat is in completely invisible intelligent coatings that are layered onto the sealed unit and create conductive heat transfer into the home . The technology also eliminates unsightly condensation on the glass , which also means reduced maintenance requirements for homeowners .
Easy installation
Sometimes new technologies or products that are great for homeowners , can mean more work from an installer ’ s perspective . This is not the case with Glow bi-folds because they are straightforward to install and have been designed to connect directly to a property ’ s 240v main supply . We would recommend that a
qualified electrician carries out the electrical connection to ensure a completely safe and hassle-free installation .
So , it ’ s great for consumers and great for installers , but does it meet the requirements of the Future Homes Standard ? Glow bi-fold doors conform with EN12150 and EN1279 Parts 1 to 4 and are compliant with the Future Homes Standard ( FHS ) 2025-2 .
The Future Homes Standard will not remain in the background for much longer , but whatever happens with future regulations , including the FHS , we believe there is an urgent need for next generation products now . Energy efficient home improvements have gone way past the point of being a nice-to-have and are now an essential part of any home improvement product portfolio .
