Survey reveals two-thirds of people would like their home to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid contributing to climate change

A

recent consumer survey conducted by SILKA Aluminium Windows and Doors found that 64 % of budding home renovators said that ‘ reducing overall carbon footprint ’ and ‘ avoiding contributing to climate change ’ were the main motivators for their self-build projects , strengthening the increasing awareness we are seeing in relation to the impact of carbon emissions produced by our homes .
64 % of self-builders want their home to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid contributing to climate change The SILKA study was carried out by the sustainability-driven fabricator to gain insight on public awareness and desire to create lower energy-use homes . It found that despite all the challenges faced , and shifting political priorities regarding how the UK might reach net zero by 2050 , a significant number of those surveyed would still like to build their own low carbon home . In fact , more than a third of respondents said that they are currently building , retrofitting or aspiring to build a low carbon home .
64 % of people are making energy efficient modifications to provide security against energy price increases
In comparison to a similar 2022 survey , saving money in the short term and desire to lower personal energy bills has been superseded by the bigger picture of the climate crisis and an overall reduction in carbon emissions . Energy prices are still front of mind , however , with 64 % of those surveyed saying they are making energy efficient modifications to provide security against energy price increases .
Wider public awareness around reducing carbon emissions is highlighted by an increase in the number of people aiming to achieve Passivhaus performance , the very highest standard in energy efficient buildings . This rose from 24 % in 2022 to 35 % in the latest study . The study states that a Passivhaus-certified home will have far greater insulation and triple glazing , with insulated frames , to support energy efficiency .
Triple glazing is key for low carbon specifications – with 56 % of people considering it ‘ very important ’
Interestingly , 56 % of respondents considered triple glazing and solar control glazing the second most important product when it comes to creating a low carbon home , just behind insulation . There was also a mention for the importance of shading to help keep indoor temperatures ambient .
SILKA is meeting this demand with its range of super-insulated triple glazed suite of windows and doors . Manufactured in aluminium , SILKA ’ s range of wide-span glazing , entrance doors , windows and rooflights all benefit from its ground-breaking Thermafill ® thermal barrier and triple glazing as standard , offering one of the most thermally efficient glazing systems available on the market . Created by the team at New World Developments using their design and technical know-how , it means that no matter the project a homeowner is looking to undertake – whether it ’ s a refurbishment , renovation , extension , or new build – SILKA can deliver it all .
SILKA supports homeowner aspirations for the highest eco design standards
Asa McGillian , SILKA ’ s Managing Director , says : “ The results from this study are extremely interesting for a super-insulated aluminium window and door manufacturer , like SILKA . Not only does it show that public awareness around climate change and the need for reducing carbon emissions is growing , but that people are looking closely at the eco-credentials of the products they use on their self-build projects .
“ Supporting the aspiration for homes that meet the highest eco design standard , we are embracing the shift towards greater energy efficiency and meeting the demand for windows and doors that lower carbon emissions and provide security against rising energy bills .”
In 2025 , carbon emissions produced by all new homes will need to be 75-80 % lower than those built to the previous Building Regulations , in line with the Government ’ s Future Homes Standard . The survey solidifies increasing public demand to educate themselves on how to reduce carbon emissions , make sustainable changes in their homes and strive for greater energy efficiency , with particular focus on the build products they use .
