FROM THE EDITOR
Take it as a ‘ complement ’
» YOU KNOW HOW PEOPLE HAVE A WORD OF THE DAY ? Well , this month ’ s word of the magazine seems to be ‘ complement ’. I spotted it a few times when we were putting the issue together , then I spotted it a few times more . In total there were 10 versions of complement , complements and complementary . Yes , I counted . There is already plenty to be complimentary about when it comes to the Clearview contributors , but this was a new reason . It ’ s not the word that was being used , you see , it was the reason they were using it . Excellent products complemented by exceptional customer service . Complementary marketing literature available to support our network . New hardware suite complements traditional and contemporary styles . The list goes on .
On the news at the moment , we hear a lot about what is going wrong with the world . In industry , we have to address issues to make things better . But , amongst the shortages – of supplies and skills – the delays and the price increases , isn ’ t it nice to have some compliments ( or in this case complements ) too ?
It ’ s fitting because we ’ ve been looking at our forward features for next year at Clearview , and by coincidence we ’ ve set out some complementary topics and themes too . We ’ re introducing a Fabricator Focus to complement our Installer Insight . You can ’ t have one without the other . When aluminium wasn ’ t so mainstream , we brought in an Aluminium feature – separate from Doors & Windows – but we want to put the spotlight on other systems too so look out for PVCu special issues , Heritage & Timber . We think these will complement each other nicely .
Event and exhibition previews and reviews will sit alongside the industry calendar , from the FIT Show in May to Glazing Summit next October . And , nestled in between these will be Associations & Organisations , Testing & Certification , Software & Technology ; perfect partnerships that map out our industry ’ s evolution . These allow us to look at how far we ’ ve come , offer real insight into our sector and what ’ s next .
The updated building regulations this June garnered few compliments , and with more changes still to come ( plus a comment that changes take at least six months to come into effect at an event I attended last week ), we ’ ll be working on the 2023 Part F & Part L supplement too . The first issue we published was really successful and packed with advice from all across the industry and I can ’ t wait to see the next one in February .
In the meantime , most of us find it hard to take a compliment , but let ’ s make it easier to see those complements . Especially in an industry that is so full of them ( 10 this month ).
With compliments , Gemma
GLAZING SUMMIT HITS NEW HEIGHTS
» THE GLAZING SUMMIT smashed its attendance record for the fourth year in a row as the fenestration industry ’ s finest came together for another vital day of debate , discussion and networking .
Almost 500 delegates descended on Edgbaston Stadium for what was hailed as the best Glazing Summit – and the event also featured more big-name sponsors , more expert speakers and more keynotes than ever before .
And according to Glazing Summit founder and CEO of organisers Purplex and Insight Data Andrew Scott , the numbers show the event ’ s growing importance to the industry .
“ The Glazing Summit has grown year on year and to get our biggest ever turn out not only shows the event ’ s significance in the industry calendar , but it also shows the desire as an industry to come together to share ideas and tackle the issues we are all facing ,” said Andrew .
“ After the boom in home improvements through the pandemic , we now face economic and global uncertainty so it was an important time to get together and discuss where we ’ re heading and how we can best navigate our way through the challenges ahead .
“ Times are going to get tougher but rather than doom and gloom this year ’ s Glazing Summit showed there is plenty of opportunity out there for agile businesses and I hope those in attendance left as optimistic about the future of the industry as I did .”
Attendees enjoyed five dynamic debates and discussions with a panel of industry experts on important issues such as the current supply chain challenges , people and skills , regulations , innovation and merges and acquisitions .
They were also inspired by world class keynotes , including Richard Harpin , CEO of Homeserve PLC and one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the UK , who closed the event , Barclays Chief Economist William Hobbs and legendary retail and customer experience expert Peter Cross . The evening ’ s Glazing Summit gala dinner included a hugely motivational speech from legendary athlete and sports personality Kriss Akabusi to round off the 2022 event .
“ The Glazing Summit is only as good as its panellists , keynotes and agenda and we raised the bar again this year ,” added Andrew . “ The combined knowledge and experience in the room was incredible and I ’ d like to thank everyone who attended and all our sponsors for making it a truly memorable event . I ’ m already looking forward to another equally important Glazing Summit next year .”
