Ordered in December and delivered in July , Oakland Glass ’ s Christmas present to itself may have taken seven months to arrive , but it was a wish come true when it did . Even if there was some thinking outside of the box required when it came to unwrapping it on-site …
Amanda Falsey , managing director at Oakland comments : “ Last year , we ’ d identified through our internal systems and KPIs that we were having increased waste and stoppage time from breakdowns on machinery . As a result we started to look into purchasing a bestmakina Vertical Glass Arrissing Machine to replace the previous horizontal arrisser .
“ Oakland has never had a bestmakina previously , and we were invited to visit another company in the UK who used one . Both our production manager and engineering manager were impressed , and so we placed the order in winter 2021 .
“ When we got the delivery date for end-of-July , we planned everything down to the letter for delivery to take place on a Saturday , to avoid disruption . As everyone can probably appreciate , time on tools is so precious at the moment , that weekdays seem impossible for this kind of task .
“ We hired all the relevant equipment to move it into our factory , but due to delays at Dover , the second half of the machine didn ’ t arrive until the Monday after . Unfortunately we were unable to keep the HIAB we had hired and couldn ’ t get another for two days ; cue some problem solving and teamwork to work out how best to get it into our factory .
“ That ’ s where our quality inspector came to the rescue with the idea to hire a JCB and he had a license for it . We think it actually made his day to get behind the wheel of a JCB and save the day !
“ The machine was placed in the factory and installed , just one day behind
schedule , and we couldn ’ t wait to make it operational .
“ Throughout , the service from bestmakina and the engineer was excellent . The machine is very well made and the installation was seamless .
“ We ’ re already seeing the benefits of the new machine , such as reduced waste , more energy efficient , faster capabilities , increased capabilities – smaller and larger sizes – and more reliable overall plus easier to service .”
