Homeowner trends are constantly evolving

Ben Brocklesby , Director at Origin

What homeowners want from their properties is constantly evolving . It adapts to change , and it often reflects the differing societal and economic landscape that the UK is facing . Recently , we have seen high demand for slimmer sightlines , allowing more of the outside to be brought into the home . Before that , bi-fold doors established themselves as the must-have product for any home , and now , excitingly , the latest homeowner trend is a move away from open plan living , towards having a more zonal feel internally .

During the pandemic , working from home was a necessity . It allowed millions of people to continue doing their jobs , whilst also keeping everyone safe . This phenomenon has continued , even after pandemic rules and regulations were loosened , with many people preferring to have the option of flexible home / office working . This means that homeowners are looking at their properties with a different perspective . They want to create separate zones within their home which can perform different functions . Internal glazing has become an invaluable solution for this .
By simply adding glass doors or screens to a space , you can create a zonal feel without compromising on the amount of light that flows through a home . Plus , frosted or reeded glass can be used within these doors for those looking to block out the clutter of a utility room , or add privacy to a bathroom , without compromising the natural light .
With vast swathes of evidence demonstrating that natural light has a significant impact on our health and wellbeing , internal doors created the required zoned areas , whilst keeping the property feeling spacious and airy . This type of re-ordering needs to be done with careful consideration , which is where installers can play a vital role .
Where internal glazing really stands out is its ability to be used in the same way as walls . The Origin OI-30 Internal Door , for example , is available in several configurations including single and French doors and fixed screens or can be coupled with a corner post to create a whole new room . This flexibility means zones can be created in a multitude of ways . For example , a corner configuration can be added to an existing open plan room , which creates a new separate space , like an office or a playroom , without the need for walls . Similarly , open plan kitchen living spaces , or even long hallways , can be divided with a French door with added fixed frames to fill the larger aperture .
Dividing open plan living spaces is not the only use for internal glazing though . Many people that already suffer with smaller rooms can open up space within their home , and increase the level of light entering it , all without reducing functionality . In these instances , internal glazing can replace a wall to create that open , light feel , whilst still blocking out the
noise from children and pets during the workday . A single door with fixed screen can establish that separation but can also add an abundance of additional light into the space .
The OI-30 also gives the homeowner the option of how many glazing bars are used , enabling them to create the look they want , whether it be modern or traditional . Plus , there are a variety of hardware options too . This means homeowners can create a more rustic feel by using heritage hardware and multiple glazing bars , or a modern look by using fewer glazing bars and simple hardware options .
As homeowners increasingly change the way in which they use and view their homes , now is the time for manufacturers and installers to be nimble , adapt and respond . No matter the style of property , specifying products doesn ’ t need to be a daunting task . Considering light throughout the process will ensure that the balance is struck between open-space and privacy .
